Customer Reviews:
Great material, poor CD.......2003-08-07
I can't complain about the music. Marlene Sai has an old-school voice that is beautiful and very effective. Her songs are an excellent collection of traditional Hawaiian songs. The musical arrangements are hard to describe - chamber-poppish, perhaps? However you describe the arrangements, they're light, they're pleasant, they use a lot of xylophones, and they let her rich voice stand out in the song.
So if I have no complaints about the music, I do have a complaint about the CD's sound. It just wasn't mastered well at all. It must have been recorded off a 2" tape that was lying around in somebody's attic - there's a very large amount of tape hiss, and even the occasional warble. It's worse than a cassette tape. I wish the original source had been cleaned up with a computer or equalizer.
It's still worth getting the album, but if you have a record player and live in Hawai'i or the SF Bay Area, I'd recommend digging around in used-record stores and finding the original LP's, rather than getting this CD.
