Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Gentle Celtic reveries.......2004-01-01

This sampler album featuring the artists of the "Maggie's Music" label is subtitled "Quiet Moods from Ancient Lands", and that's a good description of the contents--nice music to unwind with at home after a busy day. Gently traditional, lightly jazzy, quietly folksy--the styles of the selections vary with the techniques of the artists, but maintain an atmosphere of elegance and reverie throughout. Except for being mellow of mood however, this music doesn't particularly strike me as "New Age-flavored", the words used to advertise it on the back of the album cover. While the nebulous "New Age umbrella" continues to expand and defy description, I suppose the "Celtic" categorization seems sufficient here because of the lack of ambient drones and synthesizers--not that this accoustic music needs such additions. It's rich and lovely just the way it is, substituting good old-fashioned talent, intelligent arrangements and resonant recording for the fullness of sound that typically results from layers of synthetic slush. The artists showcased in "Celtic Mist" are flutist and hammered-dulcimer player Karen Ashbrook, guitarists Robin Bullock and Al Petteway, harpist Sue Richards, fiddler Bonnie Rideout, hammered-dulcimer player Maggie Sansone, and Ceoltoiri Celtic Ensemble (Karen Ashbrook, Sue Richards and vocalist Connie McKenna). The tracks by Karen Ashbrook and Robert Bullock ("The Osprey", "Good Morning to Your Nightcap" and "Feuntuen an Aod") are particularly engaging. The gently elegant style of these tunes reminds me pleasantly of another multi-artist album, "Celtic Solstice", by Paul Winter and Friends, which you might want to try also. And of course seek out the individual releases of the artists featured on "Celtic Mist", such as "Hills of Erin" by Karen Ashbrook, "Between Earth and Sky" by Robin Bullock and "From the Isles to the Courts" by Sue Richards and Ensemble Galilei.
