Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Power to the imagination!".......2000-09-13

This fantastic box set collects five albums by the cornerstones of Brazil's Tropicalism movement during the end of the 1960's. It consists of the eponymous 1968 releases from Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Os Mutantes, as well as the 1968 group effort, "Tropicýlia - Ou Panis et Circenses." Inspired by the burgeoning arts scene in both Sýo Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Caetano and Gilberto developed a musical credo that incorporated Oswaldo de Andrade's concept of artistic cannibalism. Influences from around the globe were thrown into the mix, echoing the radical sentiments of pioneering artists like the Beatles and John Cage. From approximately 1967 to 1969, this cultural movement embraced not just music, but art, poetry, and theater. Such nontraditional ideas, along with the use of electric guitar and wild rock'n'roll fashion, caused quite a stir at the time, and would prove to be problematic for Veloso and Gil as they drew much heat from the military dictatorship. Ultimately, this rejuvenating movement sent Brazilian popular music down new paths, and propelled this group of talented musicians and writers to legendary status. Caetano, Gilberto, and Gal would group together again in 1976 as Doces Býrbaros (Sweet Barbarians) with Caetano's sister, Maria Bethýnia, for a Brazilian tour and a double live album. The individual albums in this box are available separately on CD, but can be difficult and costly to obtain in the U.S. As a set, it's not only a tremendous value but an overwhelming introduction to the groundbreaking sounds of these artists in their Tropicalismo heyday.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Works of a Generation.......2000-07-25

This set contains five of the best (and most difficult to find) Tropicalia albums from 1968 and 1969. Imagine Sgt. Pepper, Surrealistic Pillow, Beggar's Banquet, The Who Sell Out, and Freak Out!, and that only begins to explain the weight of these albums, both politically and musically. Easily the most important "rock" movement outside of the US and the UK, Tropicalia tapped a nerve; it seamlessly fused the rich and diverse Brazilian musical tradition with the 1967 sounds of psychedelia and rebellion to form some of the most beautiful, powerful, and intellectually sophisticated popular music the world has ever known. The stuff was political dynamite, and the Brazilian government knew it; the leaders of the movement (Gil and Veloso) were jailed and exiled in 1969. But these albums - from the beauty of Caetano Veloso's poetry to the radical experimentation of Os Mutantes - give a window into a world, thousands of miles from Northern California, where people (briefly) believed that "Everything is Possible"
