Glistening with Pure Quality.......2002-02-18
This is a very listenable album indeed: a live recording from a festival of some of the very best Portuguese guitarists, or guitarra players?- the guitarra can be viewed as a separate instrument from the guitar. Rarely has its rich trebles been so beautifully recorded.
The program is rapid and high-spirited: in stand-alone guitarra pieces there is none of the sadness associated with fado singing. (This follows naturally as the guitarra has a very short sustain, and much of the melancholy in the songs is worked with long, gliding or modulated notes.) Specific discussion follows below, but it needs to be emphasised that not a track on either disc is filler; they are all well worth listening to. I bought this disc on a trip to Portugal (Sintra, Cascais, Estoril), and it continues to be a favourite for extended listening.
DISC ONE
Tracks 1-5 feature Paulo Parreira (guitarra=portuguese guitar) and Jo?o M?rio Veiga (viola=spanish guitar). They open in high style but quickly settle into more standard fare.
Tracks 6-10 feature Manuel Mendes (guitarra) and Jos? Ant?nio (viola). Their suite leaves little to be desired; the merry opening ("S?ida das caravelas") again being particularily delightful.
The distinction between folk (popular) and classical music is at heart an arbitrary one, and there are cases when what is basically a folk tradition is elevated to such heights as to eclipse much art music. Such cases invariably draw our attention to the possible futility of our classifications, and one such case is the very interesting suite (tracks 11-13) presented here by Ricardo Rocha on solo guitarra. It would not be an exaggeration to say that they have nothing in common with the rest of the disc, other than the instrument they are performed on.
DISC TWO
Disc two opens with the more romantic stylings of M?rio Pacheco (guitarra), accompanied by Carlos Manuel Proen?a (viola) & Paulo Paz (contrabass). Pacheco is capable of a very free rubato, exemplified on tracks 1 and 5, but the more rhythmic track 2 is perhaps his most compelling?- there are instances of chord playing here that remind me of harpsichord music?- however, it is track 3 that the audience greets with spontaneous applause.
Tracks 6-10 feature Carlos Con?alves (guitarra) and Francisco P Andion (Paquito) (viola). Tracks 11-15 feature Jos? Fontes Rocha (guitarra) and Carlos Manuel Proen?a (viola), joined for tracks 13-15 by Ricardo Rocha (guitarra). The timbre of two guitarras together, in virtuoso playing, is especially beautiful.
