Wonderful Music.......2007-01-22

Orion has a rich celtic sound all their own. It is just amazing music - I have all three albums and Love them! It is complex, emotionally moving, beautfully rythmic, upbeat, gorgeous. It took a while for these albums to arrive, but they were well worth the wait! Above all - it is a celtic sound and I really recommend it!

The music of Orion is brimming with talent, spirit and style. I love the artistry of their arrangements! Raquel Gigot's accordion playing has been labeled "expressive," "passionate," and "unbelievably brilliant," and on this album it is all of those things, frequently taking the lead and bridging the gap between French bistros, Irish reels, Swedish polkas and other assorted traditions. Keyboardist Gwenael Micault, fiddler Rudy Velghe and guitarist Willem Vanden Eede round out the sound with a distinctive fusion of traditional motifs and gently modern underpinnings. The end result is a lovely, evocative brew that's a worthy companion and a great compliment to the work of all those bands based in Ireland and Scotland. My favorites from this album include track #3, a fun fiddle set with shades of an American hoedown, and two engaging, original compositions from guitarist William Vanden Eede grace "1990:" "Russian Recipe," a hypnotic swirl of mournful improvisations over a simple, minor-toned cycle of ostinato, and "Coming From Behind the Tree," another mesmerizing piece in more of a modern, folk style. Titled "1990," this CD was recorded in that year as a demo album, but was only released in 1995 by popular demand. Try also Orion's "Blue Room" and "Restless Home," and for more Celtic music from the continent, check out the work of Norland Wind and the Breton group Triskell, both of which share Orion's knack for artful arrangements of traditional fare.
