Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The other "Essential".......2006-11-22

It's no mystery that Joyce is one of my all time favorite musicians. She had her own style that really put a stamp on Brazilian music. You knew when you heard the guitar a certain way, it was Joyce. The intimate rhythms, the bold approach (early on) and the sophisticated sound (later on) are only a few of the things I love about her music. Let alone that she truly does what she wants! It's a good musical family too - beyond just Joyce, her husband, Tutty Moreno, is a fantastic musician in ihs own right and her daughters, Ana and Clara Moreno have also had careers too although I'd probably argue that neither's approached Joyce's which is still kicking as strong as ever today.

This is her 'other' "Essential" album. It was done on a different label and was done, I believe, after the 1970-1996 album (that features one of her old vinyl covers as the photo art). The 1970-1996 album was done off of the Mr. Bongo label. While you do get a very healthy dose of carry-over on both, if you're new to Joyce's music, this is still a very good compilation of some of her work.

Onto the music... it's fantastic work by Joyce. It starts out with probaly two of her best known tracks, "Clareana" and "Feminina". Clareana was dedicated to her daughters of course, and is a mostly acoustic track that has samples of her children's voices in the end, while "Feminina" is a good song with zip to it, albeit a more 'woman' song after all. But a few songs really stick out, IMO, that you don't really hear so often. "Monsieur Binot" is one of them, with a wonderful flow to it, great build and sound. I also really liked "Moreno", a wonderful song with breathtaking orchestration and a very subtle bossa underlying the harmonizing & saxaphone in the middle of the track. Another one of my favorites on this best of was "Duas o Tres Coisas". A bit sad, but a great duet.

I recommend this one if you are looking for a very quick snapshot of what Joyce's put out in her career. It's hard for me to rate this one better than the other "Essential" album because the other one had more tracks, and is therefor a bit more comprehensive. But at the same time it's all subjective and there were songs here that would've been better than ones they used. And then again, there were some terrific Joyce pieces that were left off of both of them. The real money piece would be a box set of her work, going back to her older stuff when she first came out and then combine it with her latest releases on Far Out Records. Imagine that! And yes, if you do like this and want to know what Joyce has been doing, check out her pieces on Far Out Records like "Gafiera Moderna", "A Little Bit Crazy", "Hard Bossa", "Rio-Bahia" or even her new one with Tutty Moreno. None of the songs from those albums are featured in these 'Essentials'.
