5 out of 5 stars KiLLi.......2004-02-17

The first time I heard this cd I thought this band sounded kinda silly (maybe cause it rhymes with "Killi"). After several hearings though, I realized I was in part wrong. Killi plays a very well elaborate pop punk with many catchy songs and a lot of melody, specially because their lead singer is a girl.

This is their first album and it really amazed me, because of the quality of the guitar sounds and of all the other instruments too, reminding me a lot of Blink 182 and Good Charlotte. Mariana's vocals while are perfect for their kind of music, don't really showcase the softness and harmony that you perceive in other female-fronted bands out there: the high pitch of her voice sets Killi's sound apart from the other bands of the genre here in Brazil.

The element of disappointment were the lyrics, which I would have found perfect if I was a 15 years-old and a girl, then enjoying this cd much more. But then again, the writing becomes secondary if you put the great melodies and tight musicianship in perspective.

Out of this one I point out the songs "Anti-Social" and "Nunca deixe de errar" for having lyrics slightly superior to the others. The album also has two songs that without a doubt have potential to earn some serious air-play on the radio stations throughout the country: "Tudo a Perder" and the bonus track "Eu nýo gostei de ver vocý", which has boosted the band's career even before the album came out.

If this record falls into the hands of some big-shot music manager, Killi will definitely receive several record deal offers from the major labels, following the footsteps of CPM22 (the only band to emerge from Brazil's punk scene and break into the mainstream). Well, that may not actually happen, but they'll certainly still be huge in the underground scene.
