Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Get the reissued versions!!!!!.......2007-02-25

Just to clarify the music...
These tracks come from the first two albums of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. They are called "Rising of the Moon" and "Come Fill Your Glass With Us" These tracks were recently reissued on Rykodisc, restored and remastered. Frankly, they sound AMAZING! This complation has terrible sound quality, and the recordings sound like they were copied from an old LP. Don't settle for this ugly sounding reissue, go and check out the remastered versions. Unless you are on a serious budget, get the other discs. Combined, they cost about twice what this costs, but IT IS WORTH IT!

5 out of 5 stars Not Just for St. Patrick's Day!.......2006-12-27

The diversity of reviews of this album is amazing, from those who doubt it's really the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem at all to those who say it's the Clancy Bros. & Makem at their best. I'm among those who love this collection.

It was originally issued as two separate vinyl LPs, recorded about 50 years ago. The first 14 tracks were on an album called "Irish Songs of Rebellion" while the last 14 comprised an album entitled "Irish Drinking Songs." That should explain the division between the anti-English war songs and the songs about drunks, drinking, and women.

I find nothing wrong with the sound quality, instrumentation, or engineering here. Of course my copy of the CD is an earler release on a different label with different cover art. As the tracks are identical and the songs are in the same order, I suspect it is identical to the version offered for sale here.

It seems I add another Celtic CD or two to my collection every year and play the Irish ones around St. Patrick's Day. This bargain disc holds up well against the competition -- the Dubliners, the Battering Ram, the Irish Rovers, the Chieftains (with and without James Galway and Van Morrison), Clannad, Danu, and a more recent Clancy Bros./Makem anthology. I won't even compare it with Foster & Allen, who are not my cuppa tea.

Apparently this CD will not please everyone, but at this price it's certainly worth a listen!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best bargains Amazon ever offered..........2006-09-22

This is a budget reissue of two LP's the Clancys and Tommy recorded in the late 50's for Tradition. The first half consists of songs of the Irish wars against the Brits, some detailing incidents from two centuries ago. My LP version was titled "Rising of the Moon" and the liner notes indicated this was recorded at a home around 1956. The remaining tracks are happier songs about happier times. After the Clancys and Makem hit it big around 1963, with a Columbia Records contract and a famous extended gig on the Ed Sullivan TV variety show, their act featured more humor and fun. However, this stuff is the meat of what made the boys tick, and there is great emotion and great performance on even the sad songs presented here. If you like Irish folk music, and have none by the young version of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, you really should consider this compilation a "must-own." More than an hour's worth of interesting songs by fascinating artists is certainly worth the price you'll pay.

3 out of 5 stars A Quick Overview of Irish Music.......2005-08-09

The Cd is disappointing because it does not do the Clancy Bros justice -- they have recorded everyhting here in better, longer versions. It doesn't do Irish music justice -- most of the songs are shorten versions. That understood, I sort of like the Cd. When I just want to listen to a bit of kewl Irish music and not be distracted from doing something else, this Cd makes for pleasant back ground noise!

1 out of 5 stars Lacrymorse.......2005-03-08

This is the most boring collection of Irish music I have ever heard. Mostly military songs with a snare drum and a spare penny whistle peeping out. There's a couple semi inspired drinking songs and a couple pretty ballads with milk toast guitar accompaniment. I have been in Pubs in Ireland (Dingle Pennisula/Dublin) and they would not be singing most of this stuff now or then. It would put everyone to sleep. This is just not my cup of tea, nothing rousing, nothing to raise your glass of stout for... For soggy purests only...
