Customer Reviews:
Superb 3 CDs: Great Variety of Regions & Musical Styles.......2004-12-27
I am familiar with gypsy music from Central Europe and the Balkans. This compilation is among the best I have heard. It is filled with passionate exciting music played in a wide range of styles and countries: Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, and Bulgaria. Each CD is dedicated to one or two countries and truly represents the style of each region played by some of the most talented musicians and singers from there.
The Hungarian music on CD 1 truly represents the current playing styles of the violin, cimbalom, guitar and vocalizations of the Roma. Some tracks are sung in Hungarian others are in the Roma language. Szilavasi Band plays "If I Catch the Devil" with pure authentic vocals, the music is lively and the lyrics engaging. Track # 2 is more like a hymn, a beautiful prayer that is sung. It is a beseechment to Christ for help. "Help me, Heal me, Comfort me, Let me see the sunlight, the daytime. Praises to you in highest heaven. May the saints soothe us and sustain us in our work." The vocals are sincere, evocative, poetically lyrical and hauntingly beautiful to hear. The name "Kalman Balogh" represents the best of the best in Hungarian cimbalom playing and improvisation. On this track, one hears the trumpet played like a South American or Mexican band, along with the violin. The song is amusing and playful, about how a gypsy girl who combs her hair drives the lads absolutley dizzy and mad, she puts a spell on them. Although I would not characterize "Dance in the Snow" by Ghymes as "gypsy music", yet I do love the full seven minutes and 40 seconds of the magnificent music and lyrics. It is has a gorgeously haunting melody and vocals. The passion and violin playing are contagious ... The vocals give me goose bumps. The violin music reveals the soul of the village, the lyrics speak of a never-ending dance ... "dance in the snow" "dance in the ice" "dance in the fog". The secret hidden passions are expressed by the violin strings and vocals, a male and female duet. A highly creative and sensitive musical interpretation of emotions ...
CD 2 takes the listener to former Yugoslavia and Hungary. The Boban Markovic Orkestar play the gypsy brass band style iwth outstanding improvisation and feeling ... Romano Kokalo are the surprise group on this CD. They are highly appealing with an indescribable energy and zeal that makes you jump up and dance. There is a Turkish melodic base to their sound which I love.
