Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An essential piece of any comprehensive hip-hop collection........2001-10-12

Tightknit community, the indomitable spirit of youth, and the constant threat of sudden, meaningless violence. Not a situation any of us would choose to live in, but a situation from which came arguably one of the best hip-hop records of all-time---NWA's "Straight Outta Compton."

Well, Compton ain't got nothin' on Algeria. 70,000 dead since 1992---and thousands more injured---in clashes between the military-led government and various militant anti-government groups. And now a slammin' compilation of Algerian rap that ranks with "Compton" as a hip-hop masterpiece. Seriously.

I know nothing about the groups on this record---Intik, De Men, Hamma, K.2.C, Darkman, Cause Toujours, K. Libre. But these are no rank amateurs; each track is impeccably produced and polished. The rappers flow from English to French to Arabic, sometimes within the same lyric. Styles range from ragamuffin to gangsta-lean to cool. And these are strong tracks---you won't be hitting the "Next Track" button on your remote very often with this disc spinning in your player.

This is one of those records that, whenever I play it when company's over, I get the invariable question "Hey, what's this we're listening to?"

So why do I give it "only" four stars? Because it's only 44 minutes long. Add 15 more minutes, and it gets Larsky's coveted 5-star award.
