Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I don't have the album, but I saw them perform.......2006-07-12

This group came to my school, and they were amazing! Great middle eastern music. I especially liked it when they did some of the more folk-style songs. It was beautiful. I regret I didn't buy the cd when they were there selling it there, I haven't found it on amazon yet.

5 out of 5 stars Modernized Syrian Folk Music.......2004-07-30

This Syrian band succeeds in bridging the gap between Western and Eastern tastes. When I received this CD from a friend I did not expect much out of it. But a few days after ignoring it I did listen to it. And WOW. This music is quite engaging and well written. The lyrics and music are soul-filling and just plain beautiful. I recommend this CD and the second CD which just came out lately. Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Universal Tongue.......2003-03-11

I love this CD, and was greatly surprised when I first heard it. The Syrian band plays a combination of styles, but mainly rock and jazz with a couple of Arab folklore songs westernized. I absolutely love the female lead vocals of Sonia Bittar. Her voice is very powerful and shines most in jazzy tunes..(She recently left the band .I hope she returns to singing, and more jazz) as for the musicians, they are all very excellent, especially the guitarist with melodic solos although short, they remind me a bit of Camel/prog rock playing.
My favorite tracks are 'Ghadarouni' a gorgeous song, just over two minutes, with a nice acoustic guitar/sax, 'Safinet Nouh' a slow meditative love song, and 'Rassasa Mourtadeh', a jazzy powerful song, sung beautifully by Bittar and describes the very short life of a bullet about to be shot, from the bullet's point of view!!!
It is refreshing to see a band from the Middle East who love what they are doing and produce it with quality, not shying away from openly displaying their love for rock and jazz, but remaining original throughout. This band should get more international recognition, as they prove once again that music is a language that is truly universal.
