New wave of Armenian music.......2002-12-03
If an artist's music is the expression of his or her visions and passions, then the talented young men and women of Hokis are visionaries. Fusing together solid rhythm and blues melodies and clean hip-hop beats with original lyrics written and performed in Armenian; the Hokis crew delivered an album that successfully supported its claim of being "Music for young Armenians by young Armenians".
Each track in the Hokis album explores several styles of music and different issues that concern the Armenian Diaspora. Out of the familiar melodies of "Karune", for example, a strong baseline pervades and gives the song a definite modern groove. "Bare Aghchik" on the other hand, makes strong use of more traditional beats and the unique sound of the zurna to create an Armenian party atmosphere. Returning back to hip-hop, "Inche Butjared" [nominated in the "Best Video" category at the 2000 AMA's] offers a strong r&b vocal performance from Natalie and a rap cameo from Rugged Expression. Hokis also does well to show its political awareness with "Genocide" a passionate rap solo from Rugged Expression advocating that all Armenians stay active in the struggle to achieve worldwide recognition of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. Though with a bit of controversy, the Hokis album also delves into issues concerning young Armenian men and women with the song "Over-protective Dad". It is with songs these that "Volume Meg" introduces the Armenian community to a new brand of Armenian music. Even though some of the other tracks did seem to be "fillers" and lacked the quality of the ones mentioned above, all in all "Volume Meg" still made a strong showing as the debut album from the Hokis group.
Aside from the music, the debut Hokis album also showcases Kev Orkian, a comedian whose phone pranks are featured between each track. With a good combination of Orkian's humor, a re-make of an old favorite "Karun", a great vocal performance in "Inche Butjared", and a bit of controversy over the explicit lyrics in "Over-protective Dad", "Volume Meg" promises to give listeners a new, innovative, and fresh experience in Armenian music. Personally, I can't wait for "Volume Yerkou" and to hear a more polished record and sound from Hokis.

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-03-01
every armenian in the world has got to hear this album, its absolutely amazing. You've never heard anything like this. The songs are phenominal, for once you can actually understand the lyrics, my favourite is Genocide. Its really good how they have mixed armenian vocals with modern musical styles. And if that wasnt enough, there are these prank phone calls in armenian to armenian businesses. Undoubtedly the best armenian album ever, and it appeals to all ages. Also i got to meet the guys when they were in LA last november , you can see a video clip of me on the website..........www.hokis.co.uk
The Best CD on The Armenian Market.......2000-11-26
This cd is sooooo good. Every track on this cd is tight. It has a lot of funny songs and also has a few more serious tracks such as "Genocide." Hokis is an Armenian group from England and they are better than any other group or singer. Ku Hayerent is my favorite track. It two Armenians trying to understand eachother, it's really good. I give maddd props to this group. Good Luck!
