Songs from Within is Inspired and Inspiring music........2001-12-21

Optimistic, peaceful, pensive and hopeful best describe the overall sense of John Chen's music in this album. A variety of styles from American jazz to Chinese music; harmonic and dissonant; simple and complex; natural and synthentic; emotional and intellectual are covered in this album. I especially enjoy the simple beauty of "From Within" for solo guitar and the variety of sound in "Essence".
The quality of performance and recording quality on this album are outstanding. I highly recommend.

Truly Unique Music!.......2001-11-28

These "songs from within" show John Chen to be a master of unique musical combinations. He mixes classical with oriental, spanish and other influences to create truly fascinating and original combinations. His use of unusual musical instruments adds to the complexity. Some cuts are haunting, some uplifting, but all are beautiful! Everyone for whom I have played this CD loves it! I'll be giving alot of "Songs From Within" for Christmas gifts.
