Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Half of it FANTASTIC, the rest weak, get their SECOND ALBUM!.......2002-11-21

I first heard Bandabardo when I walked into a music store in Florence in January 2000. Blown away, I inquired at the counter and found out that they were a local Florentine group with a small following but nothing cult-like. The album I bought was "Iniziali bi-bi"... Amazon.com doesn't carry it , which is an egregious omission on their part. I say this because it is far and away their best album. Every track on it is phenomenal. For me, the album is the sonic definition of "zeitgeist" in that the listener feels as if he/she is entering a European apartment at 11 PM on a Saturday night, encountering friends and lovers, and having engaging conversation on the terrace that overlooks the Arno or the Seine or the Thames. I would describe the music as nearing Manu Chao but with more of a fast-paced Italian edge. Great rhythmic guitar, tight drums, solid upright bass, perfect hints of clarinets here and there, and your occasional amazing keyboard line. Songs in both Italian and French. I can't get enough of it!
Their follow-up, "Mojito F.C." has some amazing tracks on it but pales in comparison to their previous album. The first track "Povere Consuelo" is by far the best on the album - it almost seems as if the album was designed around it! The problem is in their lack of consistency and originality. Whereas their previous album is amazingly solid from beginning to end, this one is ridden with holes. I think this time around they were trying to sound too much like an Italian Manu Chao/Mano Negra when they were much better doing their own thing.
To anyone who reads this, my suggestion is that you try to find a copy of "Iniziali bi-bi" (one of my favorite albums)- I just found out that you can purchase it on amazon.co.uk.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME, even if you don't understand italian.......2000-04-06

The music of Bandabardo is a mixture of international sounds- Italian folk, Spanish guitars, and an overall French bohemian influence. The band is composed of 7 Italians, who I believe are from the Florence area. The lead singer, who has a strong voice, writes all of the songs, plays guitar, and on looks alone could fit into Primus. There are two other guitars, one of which is alternately ditched for a piano/synthesizer. There is also one main drummer and one percussionist as well as a bassist. The infectious enthusiasm of this group comes across clearly on cd, and is wonderful to listen to, even if you don't speak the language. I would highly reccommend this cd to anyone who likes World sounds, like Manu Chao, Cafe Tacuba, Ozomatli or even the Gipsy Kings. I promise that you will not be disappointed.
