5 out of 5 stars An Enchanting CD With Its Own Special Cultural Blend.......2003-04-01

"Ailleurs C'Est Toujours L'Ideal" is a wonderful and unusual CD that I was very lucky to discover a few years ago. Almost every cut is special and worth getting to know.

Although each song is unique, in about half the cuts tangy West Indian rythms and steel drums are crossed with expressive melodies and poetic words (mostly French) to paint one evocative picture or character sketch after another. Other songs dip into French rock, 70s folk and other genres. The results range from lively and entertaining (like "Fe Sa Ou Le", sung in a charming West Indian dialect, and "Oieio") to movingly beautiful (the atmospheric "Sous L'Meme Soleil" and the gently transporting title song).

Philippe Lavil's gentle voice and subtle sense of style give the right warm glow or ironic bemusement as appropriate to each song.

This CD has given me tremendous pleasure and I recommend it highly.
