Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A very thorough anthology of Brasilian music.......2003-05-29

A perfect introduction to Brasilian music, this long (21 tracks!) CD spans various decades, styles, and artists. Many of these songs are a vital part of the history of the marvelous city, and many are still widely heard throughout Rio de Janeiro and treasured by locals and tourists alike. The CD opens with Jo?o Gilberto's version of "Chega de saudade," easily one of the most beautiful songs Antonio Carlos Jobim ever wrote, and blessed by one of Mr. Gilberto's greatest vocal performances. The next two songs, "Conversa de botequim" by Doris Monteiro and "Garota de Ipanema" performed by Milton Banana Trio, are more urbane and upbeat, as is Marcos Valle's fun, lovely, wistful "Samba de ver?o." The fifth track is Nana Caymmi's touching, powerful version of the great ballad "Copacabana." The song is as heartbreaking as leaving a love behind in Rio de Janeiro. Next is Elis Regina's "Sai dessa," a jazzy and up-tempo number by one of Brasil's most beloved tragic singers, followed by Djavan's equally jazzy "Tem boi na linha." Both tracks sound very big-city, appropriate for a metropolis with a population approaching 15 million. Deo Rian's "Noites cariocas" is percussive and samba-flavoured, and sounds like many of the street bands you hear on the Avenida Atlantica while sipping on a cold cerveja. The ninth track is Paulinho da Viola's spare, haunting "Cora??o leviano," and then Joyce does a slow, somber version of Jobim's "Corcovado." The next track, Ivan Lins' "Cantoria," sounds a bit more dated than many of the tracks on this CD. It is followed by Simone's sultry, simmering version of Chico Buarque's "Sob medida," a song performed with much greater force (and emotional power) by Fafa de Belem. Waldir Azevedo's "Pedacinho do ceu" sounds very European, very late-night, and will never be out of style (since it was never really IN style). Moreira da Silva's "Olha o padilha" is half-sung, half-spoken, and contributes to the laid-back groove of the CD, as does Jurema's "Sinal de paz." Track 16 is Clara Nunes' lovely, socially-aware "Canto das tres ra?as," reminding us of another great voice lost too early in life. Neco does a lovely, fluid instrumental version of Jobim's "Samba do avi?o," which flows nicely into the carnavalesque "Tua beleza . . . " by Mar?al. "Pe na tabua," by os Choroes, a brief instrumental piece, sounds like something from a 1940s musical. The twentieth track, "O amanh?," by Conjunto nosso samba, is a lovely and lively samba number, and typical of what most people think "Brazilian music" sounds like. The CD closes with Carmen Miranda singing "Camisa listrada," an inclusion which proves how close the legendary icon still is to the hearts of Brasilian people (when in Rio, check out the Carmen Miranda museum, it's worth the time and effort, even if you're not a fan). If this CD doesn't transport you to warmer, happier climes, then go buy a plane ticket!

5 out of 5 stars Rio By Night.......2000-06-15

Rio by night... Sounds of the music carrying you away, and you can see millions of sparkling stars, feel freshness of the air, smell beautiful flowers, relax and follow the rhythm... I consider this CD as one of the best compilations of Brazilian music.
