Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars World's Most Mediocre Songs.......2006-10-18

World music is now big business.Originally,it was Peter Gabriel's Real World label,Putumayo World Music (still going strong after a decade),Narada, and Celestial Harmonies. Now,Starbucks has gotten into the game with its latte-friendly brand of worldbeat, with the sappy chanson of Madeleine Peyroux&the Sergio Mendes meets rap&Justin Timberlake on "Timeless" as well as Six Degrees Records, with its exploration of world techno.

"World:The Greatest Songs Ever" is capitalizing on this growing interest. Now the former PR man for INXS is delving into the "International" genre."World:The Greatest Songs Ever" is a bargain bin-friendly exploration (is it any wonder that it's at Wal-Mart???)of the genre. There are highlights, like Miriam Makeba's classic "Pata Pata",the Buena Vista Social Club's melancholy "Chan Chan"--a genuinely moving Cuban jazz song."Chan Chan" is a tearjerker,it's lost love put into music. There's Linda Ronstadt, who brought tejano music into the mainstream,as well as the African jazz of Hugh Masakela. There's also Ottmar Liebert, whose nuevo flamenco is fiery and passionate, coming from Santa Fe rather than Spain.

Unfortunately, the highlights are overshadowed by mediocrity. There's "A Little Bit of Monica",the infamous Macarena, the overplayed "Over the Rainbow" which is used in sappy scenes in TV&the movies, along with the Westernized, tiresome "Oye como va" (NOT Santana's best)and "Bomboleo." "Oye como va"&"Bomboleo" bring to mind too many college gatherings.

There are world music compilations worth exploring out there;this is not one of them.

4 out of 5 stars Just take it for what it is..........2006-01-18

Of course, when the title says "Greatest Songs Ever," you need to look at the list of tracks and decide for yourself whether or not you agree. So this is someone's subjective list of greatest songs ever. But it's a fun CD. Kind of a mish-mash of everything, but a good mood-booster.

1 out of 5 stars These are the world's greatest songs?.......2004-11-16

Mambo No. 5? The Macarena? Hot! Hot! Hot!, which I'm assuming is the Buster Poindexter song, is so annoying it's terrifying. These are literally the world's greatest songs??!! Who judged this? The guy handing out the money to the singers who would pony up for the lowest price? Lame. Just lame.
