Customer Reviews:
Talent, Expertise & Energy.......2000-02-24
This album contains an amazing assortment of musical styles, all done really well. There is something for everyone here, with instrumentals that transport you to the British Isles on a May day, and songs with enough rock to satisfy the souls of those of us who grew up on rock & roll. Mad Pudding's vocal harmonies are outstanding, and Amy Stephen sings like an angel. Robika is a beautiful love song, and a beautiful way to end this super album.
Crazy name, great album.......2000-02-19
Grand Hotel is a wonderful melting pot album. Fiddle, accordian, guitar, bass and drums combine to produce celtic style with a solid back beat. Listen to the traditional vocal harmonies in the title track, the classical influences in Hoedown and the jazz flavours in Leon Accordeon. And don't miss the Hungarian style of the final track Robika. Grand Hotel is another step forward for this popular Vancouver based band who are now building a reputation across Europe.
A MUSICAL MELTING POT.......1999-10-18
Vancouver folkies Mad Pudding are an entertaining bunch, and this is their best CD to date. Besides traditional folk ballads and reels teamed with world music beats, Pudding also incorporates classical themes into their sound, putting Brahms' "Hungarian Dance No. 5" into an uptempo version of Leonard Cohen's "First We Take Manhattan", and doing an exuberant fiddle and accordion-driven version of Aaron Copland's "Hoedown". "Reel de Janerio" is an interesting mix of Shetland and Brazilian themes (!), while "Celtic Funk Stew" is another self-explanatory hybrid that works better than you might think.
This is a band to watch out for.
