5 out of 5 stars Pure Artistry.......2006-08-12

Here's another one of my "flavorite" listening experiences: Djavan's 'Lilas.' I initially heard the songs "Transe" and "Esquinas" on FM radio, like many who first 'discovered' this artist via this release and was just taken away! Being in and around the L.A. studio environment for several years, I was already familiar with most of the west coast session players on this record(the bulk of them are great artists on their own merits). But Djavan has always; on the majority of his projects; worked primarily with many of the finest Brazilian musicians - and a few of them, such as drummer/percussionist Teo Lima and others eventually moved to the U.S. and now have worked with other artists(the Brazilian players all are outstanding musicians, hands down). The singer himself has also been spotlighted on albums by Lee Ritenour and others. This is one of his best productions, with great contributions from some of L.A.'s most gifted talents. I bought the original vinyl album but the sound quality was insufficient for this style of music. I then got the cassette tape version but it also was low fidelity. Fortunately, I snared the SONY/EPIC/JASRAC Import copy on compact disc, which is the only way to thoroughly enjoy listening to this work due to the sensitive nature of the songs(particularly with all the lyrics being in Portuguese). Even those who don't normally listen to music with non-English lyrics will enjoy this album, if only for the instrumental performances of pros like Ernie Watts, Greg Phillinganes, Nathan East and Paulinho da Costa, among others. A close friend of mine had been listening to the tape repeatedly(..luv'you,Heidi!)and really longed for a better-sounding version to 'get closer' to the music, so I made a dub(of the CD) on a high-quality cassette with Dolby noise reduction(she didn't own a CD player back then and was moving soon to Hawaii for five years). She was totally jazzed at now being able to really get 'into' this album! For this one, turn the lights down; pour a cold glass and relax to some of the best 'chill-out' music around. Guaranteed!

5 out of 5 stars A must-have album!!!.......2006-02-17

I was introduced to Brasilian music by this LP back in 1985. I would listen to this album all night and every night for about a year and a half and would just take me away. When I went to this country four years later I could not find this LP but I was overjoyed to find he was on the same plane I was coming back to NYC and I had to approach him to say how much I enjoyed Lilas and he was so nice. I am so glad it's on CD. It's a must-have for me and I think people could be musically persuaded to get this. The tracks are performed by some of the best studio musicians from L.A. and they help propel the energy and spirit of this incredible artist.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best!!!.......2006-01-30

This recording introduced me to Brazilian music at an early age and made me a believer. There is something to be said for non-corporate derived music that can be enjoyed even without being able to speak the languge of the artist. Djavan's emotional delivery is simply understood. Every cut on this one shines. I wore this one out on vinyl, then someone 'borrowed' it from me years ago. I've been looking for it ever since. Well, it is nice to know it out on CD. I will have to get a copy or two. So will you..just in case!

5 out of 5 stars Great, Great, Great!!!.......2002-05-31

Djavan was first introduced to my collection in 1984. This album has been my favorite for many years. I don't have it on CD, but I will as soon as it's available. "Esquinas" is so smooth and relaxing. Even though the album is in Portuguese, it's still a great find. Buy it, if you can find it!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Brazilian/American Crossover.......2000-07-30

I bought this album 15 years ago for 5 guilders (a bit more than 2 dollars) in a supermarket during a sale. My girlfriend back then was very surprised that I bought an album of an unknown Brazilian artist without having listened to the songs on the album. I had heard one track of the album on the radio and that was enough to be sure that I would not be disappointed. Also the names of some of the finest LA studio musicians was a second argument to be confident about my purchase (this is not always true). I really liked the album and my girlfriend liked it even better. The light Brazilian grooves together with intriguing Portuguese lyrics keep your attention from the first track till the last. Djavan is an excellent composer, arranger and singer who produces records of consistent high quality.
