A welcome experiment.......2003-11-02

A group of 4 European Jazz musicians travelled to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, and recorded traditional Ethiopian music with local musicians.
The result is a unique blend of sounds. Even when the Eauropeans play strictly within the limits of traditional Ethiopian music, their approach to sound and especially rhythm is markedly different than that of their Ethiopian colleagues.
It is interesting to hear the guitar and saxophone players stretch out on some tracks, adding a new dimension to the music. The Ethiopian musicians play as they are used to, staying loyal to their tradition, and provide the solid base over which the Europeans could improvise without changing the music too much.
I recommend this CD to anyone interested in "Ethnic combination", or traditional Ethiopian music.
