Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sincere and endearing, a true discovery of the roots of Dhrupad.......2005-10-07

This is the best Hindustani Classical album I have bought in a number of years. I have an earlier album of Shri Indrakishore Mishra from Makar Records from which I was familiar with his austere style and his virtually unknown tradition and have always loved his music for his immense sincerety, strict adherence to an otherwise completely forgotten tradition and deep contrast with the "popular" versions of Dhrupad that we hear nowadays. Discovering Shri Indrakishore Mishra's music is like opening a door into the distant past and you can't help but admire this unassuming master of Dhrupad.
The liner notes by Deepak Raja are extensive and very helpful in understanding and appreciating the music. For all those that have an interest in Dhrupad, this album is an absolute must.

5 out of 5 stars The Bettiah Vishnupur tradition !.......2005-06-23

How would one react if one were to suddenly discover cultural traditions which were thought to have been long forgotten and lost? The music of Indra Kishore Mishra is probably as close as possible to the Dhrupad tradition of the later Mughal court-- virtually untouched by the ages. Total isolation and a strong attachment to traditions have preserved a style of vocal music which has no equivalence in any thing practiced anywhere in contemporary India.

The introductory Alap uses gamaks which are extremely difficult to produce - the sound coming from deep within the abdomen. The composition - on the other hand is full of sweetness and devoid of all artificial machinations.

The Raga Megh is presented here in an uncommon form which is traditional in the Bettiah gharana. This is a collector's item and I recommend this CD to anyone seriously interestede in Hindustani vocal music.
