3 out of 5 stars Shujaat's Shuddh Kalyan - a great disappointment.......2006-03-25

With the death in 2004 of Vilayat Khan, his son, Shujaat is the greatest living sitarist I know of. He is in a class of his own, in which the balance of elements in a musical performance can approach the kind of virtual perfection which deserves only the term, "high art".
Therefore, it was a real disappointment to hear this recording, which I purchased very recently. So much of it was as excellent and beguilingly beautiful as I have come to expect from this consummate master, but every minute of it was spoiled for me by one flaw: the chikari strings were dismayingly out of tune during the entire performance, carrying right through the entire exposition of the main raag into the short dhun of Tilak Kamod at the end. I can't understand how Shujaat, normally so exquisitely sensitive in his handling of the minutest inflections of pitch, as well as to tuning in geberal, could have failed to notice and correct this fault. Unless you have a tin ear, pass up this recording, and purchase instead this artist's outstanding recording of raag Jhinjhoti on the CD titled "Amore" - I think it is the best of all recordings of N.
