4 out of 5 stars Ancient meets modern.......2007-01-18

On this Agent du Monde offering he scours the club scenes and ethnic neighborhoods of Europe that have North African/Middle Eastern connections to come up with some electronic-belly-dance grooves. The mixture of Arabic and electro-hip-bending basslines creates a sensual world beat extravaganza. There is lots of music to discover here and for the most part, most of the songs are pretty good. There are a few familiar names, for those who have listened to this type of world music before, like Cluade Challe of Budda Bar fame, Trans-Global Underground, Natasha Atlas and the legendary Cheika Remitti. Some highlights from a few of the cool songs includes Christophe Gose ethereal, purely bliss instrumental, "Sirocco" the Eastenders "On The Ride" witch features funky Arabic beats driven by percussion and wailing flutes, "Eye of The Duck" by Natasha Atlas that has her trading vocals with a male that creates a Jamaican-reggae-Arabic-genre-bending groove, "Ship of the Desert" by Out of Phase that wisps you along a mystical musical journey, Dunya performs "Karuan" that is like a chill version of the call to Mecca, "Belly Disco" by The Karminsky Experience is a psychedelic musical explosion and "Psyche Paradise" by Claude Challe is a mind-bending-trip that rips with electronica and Arabic beats. By no means is this a complete list of good songs as there are many more; in fact there are too many to mention. The influences and sounds featured on this disc range from Indian to Middle Eastern, from Spanish to North African, dub, house,reggae,trip-hop, chill, Hebrew to Gypsy and everything in between. If you are looking for something on the exotic spectrum than this is it. Sit back, sip on a cool Morrocan mint tea and enjoy the vibe; but beware, the melodies are infectous and will have you shaking your hips and booty and you might even try your best Shakira impression.

3 out of 5 stars Marrakesh Mission (not) impossible.......2006-03-05

I bought this CD after being swept up by the Barcelona Files. This one is a lot more "soulful" or "moody" than it's sister CD. It took me longer to get used to it and still remains a CD I have to be in the mood for. It's the type of music you either love or hate. Several of my friends have given me odd looks when I've had it on whilst those who are more global minded have taken quite a liking to it with my best friend and mother dancing around her living room at a 50th birthday party. If you love the idea of mystic Marrakesh then this CD is for you...if not then I would warn you that it is some what of an acquired taste.
