Tejendra Narayan Majumdar is a brilliant sarod player of the younger generation. Trained on sarod by the finest musicians, including Ali Akbar Khan, Tejendra has developed into a versatile genius. Some unique features of his play include deep resonating tones alternating with whispering ones, impressive meeds spanning more than 2 octaves, and scintillating clusters of notes in a single stroke. In this CD we see all of his genius as he performs raga Hem Behag.

Tejendra Majumdar is, in my opinion, the finest Hindustani instrumentalist of his generation, a true master of the sarod. He hails from the great Maihar school, which produced such luminaries of the mid-twentieth century as Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, and Pandit Nikhil Banerjee. He is a worthy successor to that grand tradition.

Tejendra is a deeply intelligent musician who develops a raga very expansively yet elegantly, demonstrating a superb grasp of the total architecture of the raga. Nothing in his performance is frivolous or merely showy. This is not to say, however, that his instrumental technique is anything but astounding: his tone color, his dynamic range, his clarity in rapid passages, his two-octave meends (note-bending)--all these can stand comparison with those of the best sarod virtuosos (Amjad Ali Khan, Buddhadev das Gupta, even Tejendra's own guru, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan).

This CD shows Tejendra at his best. First, we get a full treatment of the lovely Raga Hem Behag, whose dominant mood is sunny and serene. It starts with a long, purposeful alap (the slow free-rhythm solo introduction) of the kind not heard since the late great Nikhil Banerjee, and works its way through the jor, vilambit and drut movements. Tanmoy Bose, one of the best tabla players of his generation, provides subtle, thoughtful rhythmic support throughout the vilambit and drut movements. Again, not flashy accompaniment, but purposeful and deeply felt.

The disc concludes with a short (12 minute) lovely performance of the dark, haunting Raga Mishra Shivaranjani.

In sum, if you wish to hear real Indian classical music performed by the best musician of his generation, recorded with superb sound quality, this disc is an excellent choice.

You might also wish to check out Tejendra's delightful jugalbandi (duets) with sitarist Shujaat Khan, particularly their recording of Raga Charukeshi. It is the best jugalbandi since Ali Akbar Khan's duets with Ravi Shankar and Nikhil Banerjee.

This is a must buy cd. Features Cash Money Millionaires, Dmx, Jay-Z, and Master P. # 3 is the best song, tight beat, with middle eastern lyrics. You'll really be happy with this cd. I recommend it to anyone who appreciates good music. Very peaceful and relaxing.
