Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful.......2003-04-07

You don't have to be a Grecophile to love this music, though anyone with Greek ancestry is guaranteed to go wild over it. Unlike the Zorba-esqe freneticism some might associate with Greek music, these songs are soulful, melodious, dignified, and even majestic. And it's easy to see that both the Greeks and the Turks share a lot of culture apart from just food. For many Greeks, especially practicing Orthodox, the fall of Constantinople is something that happened yesterday, it seems. A tuneful, hauntingly beautiful melancholy mixed with a strange and mystical joy that is so characteristic of the best in Greek music is all here. Buy this record. I played it twice through the day I got it, and then loaned it to a Greek friend, who did the same. Now I want to get it back a.s.a.p so I can immerse myself in it again.

5 out of 5 stars So Beautiful and so Sad.......1999-02-13

I was suprised when I first listened to this album, the music is similar to Middle East and Indian Music, However, being that the songs all pertain to the fall of the Byzantine State in 1453, the songs all convey an undescribable sadness. The CD packaging explains that they are all lamentations, but at the same time, there is a deep sense of pride and optimisim in the more recent choral pieces at the end of the album, which date to the Greek indepenence movement in the 1820's. I had not been exposed to Greek Music before, although my Academic field is Byzantine Studies. Overall, I was pleasantly suprised with the Album, and would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of Greece, from the Mideval period to the present.
