Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Get hypnotized with Ondine Darcyl.......2000-11-12

A great friend of mine, a wonderful Brazilian jazz musician, suggested I check out this CD. I took him out for Brazilian food after I finally got around to hearing it, as a thank you! I wish I hadn't waited so long. I now regularly listen to it, whenever I need some peace. (Often!) The music and her voice bring me far away from daily life, when that is what I crave. I read a review somewhere about her voice being "hypnotic". As a certified hypnotherapist, I feel qualified to respond to that. Yes! The lilt of her voice soothes me immediately, and I close my eyes, letting her bring me into a wonderful state of relaxation. Many of the songs are familiar to me, which I appreciate, since I don't speak many of the languages in which she sings. As a bonus, listening to some French, Spanish, and Portuguese makes me feel like I am expanding myself culturally...While I still highly recommend hypnotherapy, in a pinch, use this!

2 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......2000-11-01

I was asked by the artist via email to review this album. After reading the trade reviews and seeing the songlist, I decided to take a chance on it. Honestly I must say that I was disappointed upon hearing it. There is nothing new here in arrangement or style that gives it a compelling reason to be heard. Darcyl's voice is weak at best, though it is not without promise. The puff-piece in the liner notes compares her to Astrud Gilberto. I don't consider that flattering, I never cared much for her voice though her rendition of Corcovado is superior to Darcyl's. The song selection is all over the map. Even among the Latin titles, Besame Mucho is out of place when paired with Garota de Ipanema and Chega de Saudade. She is backed by DiMeola ex Hernan Romero whose instrumentation is uninspired and only just adequate. The album reminds me of something that one might hear from a hotel lounge act, where the musicians are providing a pleasant and unobtrusive backdrop to whatever the patrons are talking amongst themselves about. I think that Darcyl's approach would work much better if she were backed by a combo. If you like the lounge-act approach to music, then this album should appeal to you. If you do not, forget about it.
