Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars probably the best colelction of Alternative Latin music.......2002-03-12

Anyone who likes Manu Chao will love this. The reason for that is simple- half of the tracks have a Chao connection. The collection opens with 'La Trampa'- a Chao song which features in his live show but is not available anywhere else. It then moves on to a track by Tonino Carotone in which the music is played by Manu Chao. Manu's former band Mano Negra is brilliantly represented by 'Peligro'. Former Mano Negra members are also present in some of the other contributions: the offerings by P18, Anouk and Color Humano. Manu Chao has also worked closely with Basque rocker Firmin Muguruzu and the Spanish group Amparanoia each represented by one song. Even those songs without a Chao connection are brilliant. The only recording by Spain's Jarabe de Palo which didn't sound like a feeble Dire Straits rip-off was this excellent live version of 'La Flaca'. There are songs by two of France's best new bands Spook and the Guay and Sergent Garcia. Spain's emerging talents are highlighted through the contributions of Macaco and Dusminguet. Although this is mainly European Latino music, Latin America is not entirely cast aside because El Gran Silencio from Mexico and King Chango from Venezuela (via New York) also feature. Then there is Cuba. The French-based cuban band Orishas offer us a rap version of Compay Segundo's 'Chan Chan'. The Buena Vista connection is also clear in the presence of Eliades Ochoa. Overall an excellent combination of rock, reggae, ska and Latino. I could not recommend it more strongly but get this version rather than the shorter American version with the same name.
