Customer Reviews:
An anthology of contemporary Irish performers with traditional arrangments.......2006-12-23
This album is a lovely collection of songs by contemporary Irish musicians performing mostly traditional Irish pieces. Because it is an anthology, the songs each sound quite different from one another giving the listener a varied listening experience. Note that some of the recordings are older and performed by groups that are no longer together. I discovered this when I tried to find recordings on Amazon of some of the individual pieces on their original albums.
I was surprised at how much I liked the album because, upon looking at the cover, it looks like it could be one of those cheesy collections of inauthenic cultural music. Not so at all!
The collection includes the haunting Ailean Duinn by Meav (before she came one of the Celtic Women). The song is from Rob Roy and is, I believe, a poemic lamentation from the 17th century (?) by a women whose fiance is lost at sea. It is sung in Gaelic and is beautiful.
The CD cover itself is paper - my copy was not contained in a plastic CD cover, so it is showing some wear since I received it as a gift 3 years ago. The tradeoff for the design is that the CD opens up to reveal some beautiful pictures of Ireland, and it includes a glossy pullout sheet that has: artist information (to learn more about the performers on the album), relevant facts relating to Ireland and Irish music such as what Uilleann Pipes and Donegal Fiddling are, a time line of Irish History, and a National Geographic map of Ireland showing landmarks.
Well worth the cash. Not just an album, but a cultural experience.
