5 out of 5 stars You Can Not Go Wrong With Mederos.......2002-04-08

"Generacion Zero" was the name of the first band formed on the side by Osvaldo Pugliese's bandoneonists Juan Jose Mosalini and Rodolfo Mederos to perform the music which did not fit Pugliese's concepts in early 70s. Later, this term was used to mark the whole generation of excellent musicians with their roots in tango trying to push its borders beyond Piazzolla or Pugliese (Mederos, Mosalini, Julio Pane, Gustavo Beytelmann and others). They were inventive, brilliant, they have been introducing the sound of bandoneon into jazz and turning the tunes of Mingus and Monk into tango standards. From the material of the 70s there is almost nothing available on the CDs, but it is worth trying to find it.

By the end of the century, "Generacion Zero" is turning back to their tango roots. Mosalini has established his Orquesta Tipica in Paris, Mederos records already the second album of standards (first being a dedication to Gardel). I have to warn the dancers that despite a relatively traditional approach, using this CD for a milonga would be a stretch, but as for listening, excitement is guaranteed.

For a long time I have been admiring the versatility of this generation (Just play "Violento" by Mosalini-Beytelmann-Caratini next to Mosalini's orquesta tipica or this Mederos-Brizuela collaboration next to "Las Veredas de Saturno"). This one is on more traditional end of the spectrum, hence, I expect it to be liked by a wider tango audience. As for myself, I like both and will impatiently wait for the next project whichever shape it takes (maybe Generacion Zero reunion to play tango standards they never did? - who knows, talent is always unpredictable).
