5 out of 5 stars A Miracle.......2004-03-27

Such a pure breath-taking tenderness. Irresistible... How could I live without this voice?

5 out of 5 stars Great solo CD from Ala Dos Namorados singer.......2001-04-25

For those who don't know, Nuno Guerreiro is the lead singer for the Portuguese band Ala Dos Namorados (the various artists CD _Music From The Edge Of Europe_ contains one of their songs). Ala Dos Namorados' music is somewhat based on fado, the traditional music of Portugal. Male fado singers sing in a baritone. Gender bending is not encouraged - Amalia Rodrigues, fado's greatest singer and a woman, caused a big stir when she once recorded some fado songs from Coimbra. In Coimbra fado, ONLY men sing. It caused a big stir in Portugal when Ala Dos Namorados put out their first album around 1994 and it turned out that the sweetly voiced female singer was actually a male - Nuno Guerreiro. I've never heard a male able to sing so convincingly like a woman. Nuno's voice was particularly well-received in Japan, which led to this solo album. The songs, the majority of which are in English, are mostly old standards arranged for strings, woodwinds and his voice. I bought this expecting very little, but I thought I would get it just because I like Ala Dos Namorados. I was really surprised at how good this is. The arrangements are superb and Nuno's voice is well showcased. Standout tracks include "Amazing Grace", "Amapola", "When The Saints Go Marching In" and a remake of Ala Dos Namorados' great song "O Sul". I had never heard "Amapola" before, but I found out it's an old standard. After hearing Nuno sing it, I can't imagine anyone else singing it. It reminds me somewhat of some of Natalie Cole's work starting with _Unforgettable_. If you're a fan of this type of music, you're sure to like this one. This is a CD I will be listening to for a long time to come. EMI has sadly chosen not to make any of Ala Dos Namorados' albums available in the U.S., but if you like this CD, their 5 releases to date are: Ala Dos Namorados; Por Minha Dama; Alma; Solta Se O Beijo; and Cristal.
