Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ubaka is joy through music.......2004-02-15

I saw Ubaka last night and I've never encountered a performer with so much LIFE in her. Her performance was drum and voice only(plus guest drummers) which added a more tribal feeling to her music. The CD is more melodic and in all honesty probably easier for a "non-live" listener to experience. If you have any opportunity to see her perform live do it. She is a life-empowering person who reminds you create a great memory for yourself by creating a terrific RIGHT NOW. And she does not preach (hey she's from Brooklyn) but reminds the room to celebrate life and our bodies instead of becoming a tv-watching robot. I'm unsure if her tone is considered "flat" (she has a gorgeous sultry voice) but she embodies what music and rhythm IS. She makes the sound alive through the bodies who could not stand still to her drumming. Grammy pop winners should be ashamed at the crap they produce when compared to someone like Ubaka. She even got my boyfriend to dance (well sort of)! Enjoy and live.

1 out of 5 stars Challenged vocals, lyrics and sound.......2002-05-22

Wow. I hate to be critical, but this is the worst cd I have ever listened to. The lyrics are kindergardenesque, with vocals that are flat and out of tune. Most of the music was just plain bad. I was really looking forward to some depth of soul and ancient rhythms, and chanting with deep meaningful lyrics. There is one good drum jam, but if you aren't turned off after the first song, then you're a better man than I.

5 out of 5 stars Spiral Dance-gets and keeps you moving.......2001-09-02

Ubaka Hill is one awesome artist. This work is no exception. It works at home, in the car and at work. You weave in and out of the rhythms with the musicians. It can turn a bad day good and make you feel oh so good. A must for all collections!

5 out of 5 stars Great Energy!!!!!!.......2001-06-30

Ubaka and friends are so into the primal beat. I highly recommend this recording for those who love tribal drumming and those who are into energy work. These earthy songs can really connect you to your spirit and get your feet moving. I loved it!

2 out of 5 stars Should stick to drumming.......2000-09-22

My apologies for the harshness of the title, but it's true. Track 3 is totally awesome and typyfies what I had expected from the CD. The rest of the songs really grated on me, though. The singing seemed to me to be constantly out of tune and tried to go beyond range. The lyrics and composition were infantile.

My advice: Listen to the samples. If they're definitely your style, purchase the CD. Otherwise, save your dimes.
