Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite CDs.......2006-09-19
I heard Hurdy-Gurdy featured on NPR. Once they played the first song I knew I had to buy the album. And I've not been sorry. This is an amazing CD. These are some talented performers! Very medieval sounding!
Now, to find me a hurdy-gurdy so I can learn to play too!
I can only give it 4 stars because..........2005-12-23
I have not listened to the entire album.
I, too, saw them open for Garmarna at the Nordic Roots Festival 2005. Totte and Stefan were amazing live, but I did not have the money to buy the cd at the show.
The hurdy gurdy is an amazing instrument, and Stefan and Totte really bring it to a higher level. It's truly, truly excellent music.
Cool, Crisp, Compelling.......2005-11-12
Stefan Brisland-Ferner (Garmarna) and Hýllbus Totte Mattsson (Hedningarna) have come together to create a cool, crisp, and compelling collection of tunes featuring that eerie, ethereal "medieval synth", the hurdy gurdy. Most of the tracks are traditional, but a few are originals. The duo take that ancient instrument and stretch its possibilities to the limit, layering texture upon texture.
Standout tracks are Delirium, Frost Mats, Týk Jons, and Galgen, with most everything else being atleast interesting, if not somewhat similar in style throughout. The production is scrunchy and cold, but this only reflects the moods and atmospheres of the countryside of the artists themselves and the music being created.
All in all, it is a rather good album, and if they make another (and all indications point to that end), the only suggestion I would make is take those cool experimental tracks and infuse them with more hooks and beats.
HURDY GURDY HEADS UNITE!!!.......2005-10-14
No seriously, I had never listened to this band until I saw them open for Garmarna at the Nordic Roots Festival (the hurdy gurdy/fiddle player in Garmarna is also in Hurdy Gurdy). Well, I was blown away! These two guys playing old hurdy gurdys wired to effects, and jamming to a techno rythm section on their Mac, were amazing. The music is both haunting and powerfull. If you are into Scandinavian music, techno rythms, or just excellent musicianship you should check this out. I have NEVER left a review for something, but could not leave this CD unreviewed. I look forward to more from them (and the new Garmarna coming out in 2006)... Hurdy Gurdy Heads of the world unite!!!
