Customer Reviews:
No fun to be had here... Some ephemera is best left on the dust heap........2006-10-31
The concept is certainly appealing: forgotten musical confections from the swinging sixties, sung by gamine Parisian chanteuses. What music to daydream to, to imagine a different life!
Alas, the shocking, ugly truth is that almost none of the chickadees on this CD can even hit the notes. These are astoundingly poor singers! It's not that they're raw, gutsy or folky... no, their voices are simply weak and out of tune, cruel as that is to say, and the sub-sub-Eddy-Arnold material they're warbling unevenly through is no great shakes to begin with. Compounding a listener's frustration, the few songstresses with real vocal talent ("Patricia" for example) are mostly eclipsed out by poor production, drowned out during the choruses by thundering, corny canned orchestra. While I bear none of these ladies ill-will, and a couple of the tracks have charm, this "music" was recorded back in the day by cynical hitmongers looking for the next easy buck, and the evidence of their indifference is plain to hear.
There may well be diamonds buried in the yé-yé catalog, but they aren't to be found here. For whatever reason, almost EVERY track on this comp is a recycled USA bar-band standard... "Baby Love," "Sloop John B," "My Generation"... clumsily arranged, badly sung, and sloppily recorded. Learn from my mistake, and save your money. This stuff isn't sexy, and, with a couple exceptions (the first track is pretty great!), it lacks even a curiosity or novelty factor. Terribly disappointing.
One of my favorite sixties french pop series!!!.......2005-02-17
There are better series that deal with sixties french pop singers(Ultra Chicks, Swinging Mademoiselle) and more comprehensive, but this is the only one that is readily available!!They also deal with alot of the same unknown french female singers. Maria Laforet does a cool version of Paint it Black! Their are other cover songs too!(These Boots Are Made For Walking, Nights in White Satin..etc) But the originals by some of these girls are outstanding! Especially 7 Houres du Matin by Jaqueline Taieb!! Buy volumes 1-3 of this series if you enjoy this kind of music!!
Very groove a-go-go Parisian Style!.......2004-12-15
Sort of like the old clichý "I don't know a lot about modern art, but I know what I like"; That's what I feel about this collection of young French "divas"! I know very little French language myself, but do recognize the many covers of American hits done powerfully and with great style here. Even right down to the "bump-bah-bah-bah bump" put in to "Marie Doceur, Marie Colere" (Paint it Black) at the end just like the "Stones" version! You just have to also love the "one name" girls here - Eileen, Violaine, Jocelyne, Stone, Adele, Elizabeth, etc.. Fabulous vintage graphics of record singles and overlays of designs in this CD. The only real "letdown" here was the track chosen to represent Brigitte Bardot! Could you just TELL her looks were getting people to ignore her lack of singing talents on this one alone or what?!! A much better song she recorded was "Contact" (probably on a later installment of these and I know is on an "Original Sixties" volume. I haven't gotten a chance to hear the two follow-ups to this series yet and fear many of the tracks were already used on "Original" and "Ultra Chicks" another mentioned. C'est la vie as they say!

No querýis saberlo.
