Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Rare and Beautiful CD.......2006-03-08

This is a rare and beautiful CD.

Rare in that it is not common to listen to or see CD`s such as this one which is a live recording made at the the Buddhist Nunnery at Chuchikjal. It is also rare in that on one of the last few tracks there is a brief part of the track where the monks and nuns sing together.

And beautiful in the quality of the voices and instruments. The nuns voices often weave together in beautiful harmonies. The closest I could come to describing this is, like a piece of naturally made wool with many strands, thinner in some parts and broader in others.

This compilation has clarity in its progression from start to finish and is a joy to listen to. It is quite unlike the throat singing of the monks and to some ears more pleasant, or easy to listen to and enjoy.

I have quite a few CD`s of Tibetan Buddhist chants and prayers, mantra`s, temple bells, singing bowls, and folksongs. This one has a very special place in my collection and is recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Earthy, honest, sublime for your state of mind........2000-07-06

The CD starts with the blowing of a conch shell to start the morning for these nuns. Then begins a fantastically uplifting, yet calming recording of these women who live a simple monastic life and say these daily, communal prayers.

They go through many different cadences and rhythms, weaving a spell based on compassion for all beings.

There is no background instramentation, and none is needed. Great for driving, thinking, meditating, or doing the dishes. This is one of my desert island albums.
