Customer Reviews:
Sergio Mendes .... meet Herb Alpert!.......2006-05-10
I read all the great reviews, and decided to spring for this album. After all it is the release that put Sergio Mendes "on the map." I liked the album for the most part, but boy did it have Herb Alpert's fingerprints all over it (and not always in a good way).
The Best:
The first song ("Mais Que Nada")is a classic - and is a great song. Amazing how realistic the recording is as well, it is if the band is right in front of you - until the studio fade out at the end, which was rather jarring considering how much the great recording can fool you. Still a wonderful song.
The Worst:
Second song "One Note Samba" which was one of my favorites on Brasil '65. It was sped up and jazzed up a bit (Herb) then it was INTERSPICED WITH THE DATING GAME THEME SONG (incidentally by Herb Alpert and featured on his hit album _Whipped Cream_). Yikes! Can you say cheesy? In the late 1960's perhaps not, but now it sounds really dated, campy and cheesy. This song, while not ruined entirely, was brought to the brink if you were anywhere near a traditionalist for Brasilian music.
The Rest:
There were some covers (Fool on the Hill, and others), and another song _The Joker_ that was good. Also had some other Brasilian pop-ified music. All in all, pleasant, but had Herb's fingerprints on most of the tracks. Some worked out OK, some DID NOT.
Summary:
Recording quality and mastering is absolutely first rate! If you have a good to great stereo system you will appreciate the skill in the recording and remastering that was done. This was 5/5
For the music, aside from the first song, the rest was average to cheesy since they Herb-Alpertized the album somewhat unsuccessfully. (Meaning his style and Samba don't quite go together in my opinon, after listening to this one).
For someone who wants Sergio Mendes mainstream-ized music _Equinox_ is a good pick. Pick that up first. Then get this one. It is worth it, but don't expect it to be as well produced as _Equinox_!
"The Joker is me". Brilliant CD...and the best of all of their albums!.......2006-03-31
Finally after years of searching for a remastered edition of their classic first album on CD, I have it on japanese import! The sound of the remastered CD is fantastic. We had the vinyl when I was growing up and I used to pull it out of my dad's record rack and play it in my room over and over in the late 60's. Over the years I have come across some of the inferior and short compilations of this band, but always wanted the full debut album on CD remastered in it's full glory. I picked up all of the other Brasil 66 CD's (all of which seem to be remastered now as a japanese import or domestic release.) All the CD's are great in their own way, but the debut is superior to even the near flawless Equinox. There are so many great tracks on the CD, but after 37 years (I first heard the album in 1969)my favorite track is still "the Joker". Pick it up...you won't regret it!
Exhiliration, elation, and fixation!!.......2006-01-19
I remember hearing this music as a mere 6 year old and it has stuck with me for the last 37 years! I can't really express to you what this music means to me personally. I have become a true Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 junkie in the last 10 years. I actually had to go and find this album, along with Equinox, and Crystal Illusions, and have them converted to cd in order to savor what I knew was going to be a true delight! My love affair with Lani Hall's haunting and gorgeous voice goes on endlessly. I have actually brought my students( I teach high school band), particularly my jazz ensemble members, into the Brazilian Jazz fold by playing many of the cuts available on sheet music. It's still delightful today and will be for many years to come. It's a MUST HAVE!!
A Super Bossa Classic Album.......2005-11-11
This is a milestone for Bossa Nova and for what was going to be known as Brazilian Jazz; no serious Bossa Nova collection would be a real one without this jewel by Maestro Sergio Mendes.
I've had the album for a while and I'm so glad to see the CD already out.
To my opinion, "Samba de Uma Nota So", "Tim Dom Dom", "Agua de Beber" and "Berimbau" versions in this album, are the best among all the other available versions ever. If you don't believe it, get this CD and verify it.
One of the best Sergio Mendes albums and by far..............
Classic stuff.......2005-07-08
A great album esp the first half. The second half is a little thinner, more latin than you might like. The vocals are a little up-front sometimes, but the album has a live feel to it. The small combo is a treat to hear. The first tune of course is the classic that everyone will recognize, and evokes the 60's immediately. The only complaint I might have is that the album is extremely short, with 10 songs and the two longest of those are just under 3 minutes. There's less than 1/2 hr of music on this album. A great debut from an icon of the period. I wish Herb Alpert had played at least one little solo somewhere, but he was only interested enough to put his name on it, not to play on it. By the way if you like the French electronica group Stereolab, this will show you where they got a lot of their sound.
