Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I'm not a kid, I just don't have my own Amazon account........2007-02-21

I've never written a review for anything before, quite possibly because I haven't enjoyed anything as much as I enjoy this CD. All the songs just seem to flow perfectly. Although quite given, I skip de merveilles.

All the way from Syunikiss to Bois de merveilles this is an amazing album. The only other album I have that compares to my love for this would be Gackt's MARS (which you should look into).

The songs on this album that REALLY stand out on this album are~

Syunikiss
ILLUMINATI
au revior
Ju te veux
Le ciel

However like I said, every song on here is fantastic. If you like J-Rock and do not own this album, shame on you, because you are missing out on one of the best albums my ears have ever had the pleasure of hearing. So pick this up, you shall not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Mervielles Review.......2007-01-26

I have owned this CD for two years and have yet to become tired of it. You will like it if you enjoy Classical music, Japanese Rock, Music with Dark themes or synth.

I love this CD because the songs vary, they're a mix of dark, occult type songs and soft, violin/piano songs. And it all fits together. So I give it 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Remember the old days...?.......2006-10-17

I really miss the old days sometimes... like the earlier part of this decade when Jrock was still a relatively underground phenomenon of fans trading mp3's with each other. Yup, the old days sure were nice... Dir en Grey was still a visual band and they actually played rock music instead of the drop tuning metalcore that they are famous for nowadays. X-Japan and Luna Sea were still the most popular and coolest Jrock bands around. There were a ton of indie visual kei bands still around. It was long before the horribly contrived music of "Gazette" became popular. And, of course, Malice Mizer was still together as a band making amazing music. It was before Gackt became a huge pop icon in Japan. It was long before Mana decided to play cheesy Cradle of Filth inspired Goth metal. It was before Kozi... um, before Kozi really started to get the artistic recognition that he always deserved. In any case, forget the reminiscing. This album was Malice Mizer's all time peak as a band. Every song on here is an instant classic. This is one of the most unique rock records I have ever heard. It has everything from Classical music influences to Goth rock, Electronic music, and Progressive rock influences. It is a truly unique gem and a work of art from a band that is hard to believe was a massive "hit" in Japan.... and the world if you think about it. I wish our mainstream rock music was this "creative" over here.

5 out of 5 stars gackt is the best.......2006-09-22

the best of this group : Mana & gackt, i love them ( iluminatti ...) wow

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-04-16

"Merveilles" is the second Malice Mizer album to feature Gackt as the vocalist, and after a few spins it's easy to see why this is considered the pinnacle of their career (although to be fair, that's a pretty subjective statement... both "Voyage" and "Bara no Seidou" are excellent, if quite different). As has been noted before, this album offers their best balance between gothic grandiosity (a.k.a. Mana) and good old fashioned pop/rock (Gackt). It's a cohesive piece of music, best listened to in the album format (i.e. front to back), and even though the music is almost entirely in Japanese.... it's one of those albums where you don't need to understand the lyrics to be completely swept away by it (and if it bothers you that much, there are translations of unknown quality that can be found on fan sites).

Really, song for song this album is awesome, and my favorite seems to change almost every time I listen to it. "Au Revoir" and "Brise" (the most upbeat song on the disc) usually duke it out for number 1 spot, but strong arguments can be made for "Syunikiss" (love those violins), the dark and schizophrenic song "Illuminati", and the almost carousel-ish "Gekkanoyasokyuko". The only song that really grates is the English track (not that you can really tell) "S-Conscious", but after many listens... I have to think that it was done intentionally, and the beautiful closure to the song makes it all worthwhile.

All told, one of the single best imports I've ever purchased. Also highly worthy of note is the packaging: it's gorgeous. The CD comes in a book, with several pages of full color illustrations of bandmembers in full costume (Malice Mizer was a Visual Kei band, after all). This album stands out in every way. If you're looking for great music a little off the beaten path, have any interest at all in Jrock, and can keep an open mind, then you can't go wrong with Malice Mizer.

One of the few CD's I've ever said this about, but:

Worth every penny.
