Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars It's Alright..........2007-02-08

I felt this album was poor in comparison to Le Fil. There are some catchy songs on this album, but the overall album was a hit or miss for me. The only songs i liked were 1,2,3 and Paris. After that i felt like most of the songs sounded the same or just didn't have the same catchiness as those tunes. But Sac Des Filles is an okay album, it's not necessarily bad, but i think Le Fil by far is her best album, and shows signs that she's definitely a talented French artist. I look forward to hearing more works from her.

4 out of 5 stars Simple but grand.......2005-09-30

I fell upon this CD after hearing one song from Camille's more recent album and I loved it. Not the typical music that usually listen too but some songs are just undeniably great. I admit there are some songs that I haven't even grown to love or listen too but tracks 3,5,6,7 and of course the amazing finale "La ou je suis nee"... I can simply keep that song on repeat.
The album is mostly vocal with some tracks having great instrumentals, Camille loves to plays with her voice and we love her for that.
The lyrics are quite simple, but damn smart with a lot of emotions just under the surface.
If you feel like something different and trying something new... take a chance on Camille either this album or "Le fil" the newer one and you at least be intrigued.

5 out of 5 stars Wow to infinity! How truly, truly unique! .......2005-05-25

Camille is truly where it's at! We must get this kind of music popular in the United States. There is no question that people with impeccable taste will like artists like Camille. Camille's voice is wonderful, and she can really hit those high notes. The music has so much beautiful variability that my ears are in perpetual suspense!!! :-) There is not a bad song on this album, but here are my favorites:

#1: 1, 2, 3: this song starts with a music box melody, alters to a jazzy accordian sound, and finally; and the end, there is a medley of instruments that sound like they are falling out of the sky (and screaming for their lives)! What a unique song, indeed!

#2: Paris: as flamboyant as the previous song, this song has a sound all its own, so much so, that I can't even descirbe it. You must listen to it for yourself.

#3: La Demeure D'un Ciel: Ba, ba-da, ba-da, ba-da...my favorite song on the album! This song has a perfect rhythm, not too slow, and not too fast; a gentle cabaret-pop feel, and plenty of great musical elements unique to Camille. Not as flamboyant as other songs on the album, but very well-balanced.

#4: Les Ex: I like the flute in this song. And don't be alarmed at the end where it sounds like glass breaking--that's just the song!

#6: Ruby: the only song on the album entirely in English, which might be enough to intrigue American listeners. It is a good song with interesting lyrics.

#7: Le Sac Des Filles: the title song, and a great, great, song indeed. This song competed with #3 as my favorite. Simultaneously, a pop and jazz song, this is also a wonderful example of Camille's exquisite voice, as she reaches the high notes immaculately, without making you want to run and hide. Her high notes are not excruciating like nails on a chalkboard, but like a smooth white light descending from the clouds of Heaven! And, wow, what an ending!

#9: Je Ne Suis Pas Ta Chose: one of my other favorites on this album. A pop song, but a quality one. Translates in English to "I am not his thing." The middle of the song has chant-like whispering, then builds up at the blink of an eye. This would most likely be the best song to play on American radio stations. Again, wow!

So, the best three songs on this album are:

#3: La Demeure D'un Ciel
#7: Le Sac Des Filles
#9: Je Ne Suis Pas Ta Chose

Note to parents: I am not a parent myself, but I know a lot of little kids and teenagers that listen to absolute crappy music, which will not improve their taste. Don't ruin your kids and teens by permitting them to listen to "any" rap music, or popular American artists like Brittney Spears, Jessica Simpson, and the like. (Honestly, I hate to pollute this review by mentioning these vile names)! Trust me, raise your standards immensely, and listen to artists like Camille, Patricia Kaas, Julien Clerc (this is my favorite male French singer), and Benabar. You and your offspring will benefit from this kind of music. It doesn't matter that it's French; learn French if you must! If you must listen strictly to American music, then get into Barry Manilow. See my other reviews for my impressions on these great artists!

Again, and in closing, Camille is where it's at! I can't wait to purchase her newest album, "Le Fil." Everyone: help my cause by calling or emailing your local radio stations and demand that this great music be played! Have a great day! Thus concludes this review! :-)

4 out of 5 stars Camille - Le Sac de Filles.......2004-10-15

I was impressed with the catchy sound of this record from the very first track, "1,2,3" and it only grew on me. Camille Dalmais doesn't have a strip-paint-from-sheet-metal kind of voice, but she chooses good material that fits her sound.

The lyrics are ironic and sly, and worth repeated listens. The title track, pointing out that man's ultimate question is "what's in the girl's purse?" is a winner; it has a catchy, pop beat. I also like the wordplay on "Les Ex," a song about ex-lovers. Since the lyrics are included in the booklet, it's a good record for French students to sing along with.

If you like intelligent lyrics and snappy tunes you will like this record. Think Catatonia in French, not Welsh.

5 out of 5 stars Merveilleux!.......2004-09-30

Imagine Fiona Apple meets Damien Rice in vintage Cannes. Rich acoustics, satisfying sounds, and poetic French vocals. For me this CD is not just a keeper but a 'play until the tracks are worn right off the disc. Then buy another.' [Mrs. Readwell's recommendation: Allons-y! We must buy! Buy!]
