Customer Reviews:
spectacularly emotional voice.......2006-07-06
Gessesse's singing goes so far beyond what one may be ready for -- yes, it's music to cast out demons, the voice of a dead lover being exorcised -- all within the framework of Marvin Gaye or Sam Cooke-style jazzy funk. Some of the most amazing music I've ever heard.
Ethiopiques, Vol. 17: Tlahoun Gessesse.......2006-06-16
I can almost say... I want to buy most it if not all of the Ethiopiques version, since most of these songs are exotic jewel to me. This CD especially tracks 8, 9, 10, etc... have wonderful lyrics & melody...lovely... Tlahoun Gessess is Ethiopian James Brown.... Thank you amazon for allowing us to come & sample these songs...
It is great, but..........2005-03-03
...I'm not sure I understand the hype over this one. I like it a lot but I cannot put it on the same exalted level as Vol.'s 1, 3, 6,7,8,9 and 14. It might be something like a preference for Sam Cooke over James Brown...or it might not. I'm going to live with it some more. Track 4 is extraordinary. Anyway, you can't go wrong buying an Ethiopiques disc...
lyric translation sucks.......2005-02-11
I haven't purchased this particular ethiopiques, but i do own the 16th, and 7th (Asnaqach and Mahmood). The collections of songs are great. However, the lyric translations in English are very inaccurate. It has the artist intro and lyrics in English and French. The translations in English are very short also, they only cover the first 1/3 of the song, which doesn't make any sense b/c if you are going to offer the lyrics, then translate them all the way through and precisely. If you don't know Amharic, and you are eager to know what the singers are singing about, do not refer to CD's coverlet book.
Excellent CD.......2004-06-09
This is one of the best Ethiopian CD's available. In this album, Tlahoun sings in his most beautiful voice, some of the claissics of Ethiopian music. I for one believe he is the best singer to come out of that country. For all those Ethiopians living abroad, this is the album to invoke the memories from back home. Truely nostalgic album.
