Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars More Great Polish Femmemetal, NAAMAH.......2004-08-13

Some Might call this Gothic. Well to me Gothic is Sisters of Mercy or Bahaus, maybe even Type O Negative. If Naamah is Gothic than so is Guns and Roses. It's just that Naamah and it's sister Polish Metal Mind (record label) bands ie. Artrosis, Delight, Desdemona, Closterkeller even Moonlight are closer to Heavy Metal than Gothic. After all their label is Metal Mind not Gothic Mind! That is why I call all these band's music Femme Metal, since they all have excellent female lead singers, short for Female Fronted Heavy Metal. That's right they're Heavy Metal. Not solid mind you, there is variety, but the up tempo songs are definitely Heavy Metal.

Naamah's Singer, Anna Panasz, though not blessed with an exceptional voice, has an good voice and a style that compliments the bands music and that is the strength of the band, their music. The song writing is quite good as are the arrangements. I look at all the songs and say they are all above average.

There are several great songs on U.L.T.I.M.A. but three stand out for me, "Eternal Fear", "Noli Me Tangere" and "Jeszcze Jedno"(Last Night). "Jeszcze Jedno's" lyrics as all the bonus songs is in Polish. "Eternal Fear" is my favorite song on the album, a medium to medium fast tempo song with orchestral overtones and a heavy howling, whinning guitar. Annas vocals are really something on this song which has a somewhat chugging beat and backing violins. If you like great guitar solos, this is for you.

"Noli Me Tangere", opens with a grand if not bombastic opening with a double track of Anna joining in. This is the longest song at over eight minutes so it is fairly complex and varied, There is a strong progressive element in this song and I have decided whoever is the lead guitar player is one of the better player around. This was other review's I read favorite song and it's almost mine.

"Jeszcze Jedno"(Last Night), one of the bonus songs, is very good also. This song will fool you, as it starts out like an easy going ballad then switches to a guitar laden, up tempo number after about two and a quarter minutes. When you are able to hear it the song also has a memorable melody.

I like this album a lot. True vocalist Anna Panasz does not have the purest voice in the world but I like it and in some respects she reminds me of fellow pole, Artrosis's Medeah or Italian Diva Cristina Scabbia and trust me there is nothing wrong with that. The music is also reminiscent of Artrosis's later more progressive ventures. Yes I'm throwing in another sub genre but that's what it is. Progressive Female fronted Heavy Metal and it's good almost five stars worth. One look at the Avant Garde cover and you get the progressive idea.

Now here's a twist, the three bonus songs really are a bonus. Though they are all in Polish I gave them 5, 41/2 and 41/2 stars respectively. They are certainly no throw ins. Overall the album is almost a hour long, so you get your money's worth. Final Rating 4.4 stars
