Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Torme at his best.......2005-11-29

Bernie Torme's career has been frustrating to watch over the years, as he's always had the talent and attitude to do much better financially/sales-wise, but hasn't especially seemed to care. I never met the man, I might be entirely wrong, but I get the feeling he prefers relative obscurity to stardom. He's had his chance at sales - sticking with Gillan, could have worked with Ozzy much longer - but has instead restlessly jumped from project to project, changing line-ups and side musicians constantly.

This Live album, coming off the Electric Gypsies e.p. and album in 1983, captures him at his most confident and creative, not to mention probably most popular. Wild West is just a kickass rocker, Turn Out The Lights is basically Gillan's No Laughing In Heaven rewritten, building to a great jam, Too Young sounds great and a whole lot cooler than so many other 80s tunes based on, um, a similar theme, Torme's blaze through No Easy Way makes you shake your head when you realize Gillan was a six-piece band and the Electric Gypsies were a power trio, etc. The original album was only six songs long, too short really, but every track was killer.

The CD release here tacks on versions of Wild West, Turn Out The Lights, and Presences recorded a few weeks later but on the same tour, with the same personnel. They sounds like they were recorded in a public toilet. The sound quality of these extras would be crap on a bootleg, and should not have been included. Wasn't there a single recording of Shoorah Shoorah or Star out there to be used?

Torme is still recording sporadically on his own label, Retrowrek. He can still bend 'em and he still has attitude in spades. He's not out there playing Vegas, hosting call-in shows, or covering the Great American Songbook. If you like hard guitar/power-trio rock, you can't go wrong with this CD.
