Customer Reviews:
a band ahead of its time..........2005-02-19
every time i hear a pound of flesh,it takes me back to great times.jiggs lee was the ultimate front man and singer from hell.no one could sing like him.loyd foresbergs guitar....blow away.dave elmeers songs and bass/acoustic guitar playing...incredible.and kevin deremers drumming was tight and solid.an all around gas of a time. i may be 49 years old,but i can still rock on with the best of them.cains a pound of flesh helps me to feel 19 again......
A live act that was second to none..........2004-04-06
Cain occasionally played a little club near my home town in west central Wisconsin, so I had the privilege of seeing them perform several times in 1973-74. Their live performance of these songs was deliriously high energy from start to finish. When the album was released, it was no surprise that the studio versions were just as dynamic. This is a prime slice of early seventies hard rock that stood equally with the headliners of the time and still sounds fresh today. Its release on CD is long overdue.
Emblamatic of the Seventies!.......2003-05-27
Oh, the 70's...disco...Jimmuh Cahtah..Phil Donahue...Laverne & Shirley...need I go on? But as the current TV series will attest, it wasn't...ALL bad. No, indeed: Gas hadn't hit a dollar yet, and another...commodity was much more readily available, as Nancy's "Just Say No" gobbledygook was still a thing of the future. Lotsa guys correctly assumed "whoah, let's get it while we CAN," and behaved accordingly. And, for some reason, this album has always reflected this grim memory to me. Ominous, dark clouds on the horizon, but, doggone it...well, up until disco stuck its vile presence into everything, anyway...the ladies looked SO FINE. And, in one way or another, "A Pound Of Flesh" comments very "70's-ishly" about the status quo then. Great musicians, ALL of Cain...but still: for the all-time-number-1 comment on..."being alone" (Think: "She Bop"), dig "If The Right One Don't Get You The Left One Will." Forget "I Touch Myself," and "Imaginary Lover," this comes right out and tells it like it is.
FINALLY This is unique masterpiece that Still Sounds Fresh.......2003-05-11
THanks to Monster for Re-issueing this masterpiece. Part Queen, Part Bad-Company, Part Led-Zepplin, Part Unique, this is a must have piece of 1970s Rock. Great multipart vocal harmonies. Great unorthodox guitar playing making use of echoes, patterns, and true strat sounds, tight rythmn section. Thanks to CAIN for their years of local/regional service. I learned a lot from watching them live, and I will always remember them! Very tasteful, melodic, bluesy, but heavy without the current angst hangover...
