Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Sorrow!!!!!!!!.......2001-09-27
This is one of the most special albuns i have.It is in the same line as "Alternative 4", but in my opinion it's much better, and i can say that is the best Anathema album.A clearly "Pink Floyd" influenced album.Vincent's voice is at it's best, and Danny's lead guitars really draws emotion in the tracks. My favorite track is "One last goodbye", that when i heard for the first time i started crying because it was so beautiful, so deep, and the lyrics... For me is one of the most beautiful song that i ever heard. In matter of fact, the whole album is perfect, and i can assure anyone that this is a great buy.Everyone who apreciates the beauty and sadness of music will love it as i did.
Judgement.......2001-01-01
This is one of the best CDs I've bought in a long time! To say this CD is anything less than amazing is wrong. This CD reminds me a lot of Pink Floyd in a lot of respects; it's trippy, it's mellow, and there are a lot of fantastic acoustic parts throughout the entire CD. Vincent has got one of the most melancholy voices I've ever heard. This is a depressing, but very moving CD. It's very atmospheric. If you're into Pink Floyd, check this one out. If you're into atmospheric, mellow metal, check this one out. My favorite songs are Deep, Forgotten Hopes, Make It Right (F.F.S.), One Last Goodbye, Judgement, and Don't Look Too Far. The only song I don't really care for is Parisienne Moonlight (it just doesn't sound right to me). Buy this CD and be glad you did.
Pink Floyd's emotionally charged gloom cousins.......2000-12-25
My first taste of Anathema was their full-length debut, "Serenades". The heavy, doomy, atomospheric ambience overwhelmed my senses. Well, I've been a fan ever since. Their previous release "Alternative 4" was not up to par by their standards. The songs were weaker and more poppy. But more important, they lacked emotion. "Judgement"(sp) is overridden with emotion. In fact, if the pure beauty of the feedbacky tones of "One Last Goodbye" don't make you shiver you must be a corpse. Without a doubt, "Judgement" is Anathema's finest hour to date and is an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. If you like Floydish type metal or any other Anathema album, check this out for sure.
somber & engrossing...but also gets lost in itself.......2000-08-17
A 3 rating doesn't do this justice; I will admit that straight out. A 4 might be more just on an objective basis; for those who are likely to be buying this album, however, chiefly those familiar with Anathema's earlier metal work, a 3 may do well to warn of potential dangers.
This CD contains some of Anathema's best songwriting. The songs are depressive but not as stark and bare as many of the songs on "Alternative 4," and the vocals are much better than on "Eternity" (where they were often out of tune). The best song is a gorgeous, moving ballad called "One Last Goodbye," dedicated to the memory of the mother of two of the band members.
In general, the album maintains a sound of somber reflection and tends evoke a very British atmosphere, in keeping with the band's location. Pink Floyd is an influence, yes, but Anathema is more consistent than Floyd and harks back more to a Renaissance or mediaeval aesthetic.
I mark the album down to a 4 because it often gets lost in itself. One goes in enthusiastic and somewhere along the way loses track of the music, only to come out again with instrumental "2000 & Gone" wondering what has just transpired. Some may find this a benefit; I find it irritating.
I mark it down to a 3 solely because it is, in the final analysis, not metal. Now, simply because a musical recording does not adhere to the conventions and "tricks" of a genre, does not mean that it is any less worthy--in fact, the opposite is more often the case. However, in this case, my own view is that the somber timbre and depressive feel would be enhanced by contrast, by more energetic sections, though they need not necessarily involve any particular "heavy metal" artifice. And the fact is that some people will be turned off by Anathema's confirmed direction away from metal, and I am not entirely sure that their prejudice is to be condemned.
Awsome.......2000-05-02
I just got this cd moments ago, and listening to it, it is incredible! The chaps from that little isle we call England have really outdone themselves. I love their other releases, but had I heard this one first, I don't know how I would have felt about them. They are really growing and developing as a band, and I love it! Do yourself a favor and buy this album!
