5 out of 5 stars Motorhead - self-titled (Roadrunner).......2006-11-29

Originally released in 1977,a year or two after Lemmy exited Hawkwind. As most of you probably know, this is Motorhead's stunning debut record. So good to finally get it on CD.Simply outstanding British metal.Does it get any better than this?I could listen to this CD two or three times in a row,it's THAT good. Tracks that more than make this disc a true keeper are the opener, title cut-the band's namesake "Motorhead", "Lost Johnny", the slammin' "Iron Horse/Born To Lose", "Keep Us On The Road" and "City Kids" (also liked the Pink Fairie's version of this tune). Plus you get four(4)bonus cuts tagged on. Line-up: Lemmy-bass&vocals,Larry Wallis(former Fairies member)-guitar and Lucas Fox(R.I.P.)-drums. So highly recommended,it hurts.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT? NOT EVEN A PICTURE?.......2005-09-07

Sometimes I am amazed at the killer stuff that goes unnoticed in this place. MOTORHEAD the first album by MOTORHEAD with that KILLER opening song MOTORHEAD is one of the greatest things I have ever, EVER heard.
SO LOUD MAN, SO VERY VERY LOUD. SO very excellent.

I forgot that this band was responsible for that ACE of what?

This album is no less than, THE BALLS!

Somebody tell these guys to post a frieken' picture, people are gonna think this one dissapeared! OR WILL NEVER KNOW OF IT!

Something must be done. DO YOU KNOW THIS ONE? If not BUY IT.

3 out of 5 stars Middling release of mixed pedigree.......2004-05-20

Of course it got a whole lot better from the "second" release onward. Two of the best songs here are old favorites if you came to Motorhead from Lemmy's old job - bass player and occasional singer for space rock band Hawkwind. Those are Lost Johnny from Hawkwind's excellent Hall of the Mountain Grill, and Motorhead, recorded by Hawkwind as a B-side of the Kings of Speed single the following year, but available on their Independent Days CD. There is also Watcher, performed by Hawkwind on an even earlier release Doremi Fasol Latido, and while this version is a marked improvement, its still a fairly tired tune. Vibrator and City Kids are obvious Larry Wallis (ex-Fink Fairies) tunes, and City Kids was on their Kings of Oblivion album.

This is somewhat of a melange. The first Motorhead album was recorded with Wallis and Lucas Fox on drums. The subsequent and successful lineup released Motorhead on Chiswick records as a debut, putting out the earlier material as On Parole on Bronze records after their Overkill success. So this is kind of a compilation of early work rather than a debut album, and its not essential listening. The tracks that you must not miss - Motorhead and Iron Horse are well represented on the classic live album No Sleep Til Hammersmith.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent debut.......2003-12-18

Motorhead (1977.) Motorhead's first album.

As the seventies drew to a close, hard rock/heavy metal was becoming an increasingly popular genre. Come 1977, and a band destined to become rock legends would release their debut album - a little band called Motorhead. Combining the bass and vocals of the legendary Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister, the guitar superiority of "Fast" Eddie Clark, and the equally notable drumming skills of "Philthy" Phil Taylor, these guys knew how to rock and roll. Before 1977 had reached its end, the future rock legends released their self-titled debut album. Read on for my review of it.

The most popular (probably the ONLY popular) song to emerge from this album is, without question, the title track. This song is a classic metal masterpiece, and this version received a long overdue revival when a live version was released as a single a few years after this album was released. Just because the other songs were never very popular doesn't mean they aren't good songs, though. For example, the second track, Vibrator, features some major classic punk influence, which makes for one of the most interesting tracks the band has ever done. The band only continues their onslaught of classic metal with songs like Lost Johnny and Iron Horse/Born To Lose. And, like so many other rock bands, Motorhead gives us a cover of the classic blues song, Train Kept A-Rollin'. This version is quite possibly the best! But, this reissue features two things the original vinyl pressing didn't. First of all, you've got the expanded liner notes. And secondly, you've got five rare bonus tracks! If you're going to reissue your albums, adding bonus tracks is a very smart move. One of these bonus tracks, I'm Your Witch Doctor, must be heard to be appreciated. All in all, you get fifty-two minutes of classic metal excellence (that time includes bonus tracks.)

It's a shame Motorhead's debut tends to go unappreciated, even by fans of the band, because it really is a good album. As another reviewer stated, the sound quality really could have been better though (I was pleased to see bonus tracks and expanded liner notes, but don't you think they could have tried to clean up the sound quality a little?) If you're a fan of classic metal, or maybe you just want to hear what Motorhead was like before they got popular, this is a highly recommended album.

5 out of 5 stars Motorhead - Heavy Metal Reborn.......2002-04-26

Britain 1977, the old 70s giants: Zep, Purple, etc are dead, the young punk upstarts had killed them off and they probably deserved it. Punk was hard and fast enough but something was missing - it was a bit lightweight. Then BOOM!!! I heard Motorhead. That opening title track blew me away, now this was full on hard fast maniac metal like I had never heard. A trio of full on headbangers, Lemmy played that bass like a madman, Fast Eddie's guitar fitted perfectly and the whole track was propelled along at lightning pace by Philthy Phil's drumming. The album is worth getting for this one track alone, a track which announced a new kind of heavy metal, one of those rare works that changes an entire genre. A must have for any serious metalhead.
