I Could Hardly Make It Through a Single Listen.......2003-10-28
As I explain in my scalding denunciation of the Second Cyclops Sampler, I came to these Cyclops Samplers as a result of my search for more music similar to a band called "Shockheaded Peters." This strange, dark, intense band recorded several years ago on Cyclops and ever since I acquired it in a used CD bin I've beeen looking for more of their music or something similar. They recorded on the Cyclops label.
I decided to go for these two Samplers. I was quite optimistic because I figured that if this label recorded Shockheaded Peters they must be quite visionary with their other artists as well.
Suffice it to say, this music is dull, drab, bland. I didn't hear a single song which I liked. There is a dated quality to this music, like B-grade recordings made by early 80's aspiring pop bands who paid to be recorded as they couldn't get published by standard means. That's how it sounds to me anyway. If there are any well known or significant artists here, they completely escape me by name or sound. The tonal quality seems muted to me as well, which I guess is a good thing since the music is so bad.
It seems inexplicable to me that a label who recorded the band I've mentioned should also apparently put out so much other unnoteworthy music. Perhaps a change in corporate management or something like that explains the difference. Very disappointing, and I thought you should know.
The complete progressive pot pourri.......2001-08-16
Thanks to cyclops we have a sampler that gives us a sneak preview into the world of progressive music - right from symphonic, complex rhythms to dark, brooding metal!!! From the start of the first disc to the end of the last disc we get a balanced mixture of all the styles that is ever in the progressive world. The highlights of the first disc is undoubtedly, the complex music style of Citizen Cain. Fruitcakes's special live version of "on the edge", makes you want of more of them. Flamborough's head presents another beautiful track. Without doubt, the Swedish giants, Sinkadus are the highlight of the second disc. With beautifully crafted flutes blending seamlessly with the keybords and the rhythmic guitars, they present a real memorable track. Kopecky presents the darker side of music with some amazing guitar riffs, thus completing the album in apt style. A must have for all the lovers of progressive music!!! The perfect SAMPLER!!!!!
