3 out of 5 stars It grows on you.......2005-03-14

When I first heard this album I wanted to trade it in/throw it out! The music is so great, some of the best Bathory(Quorthon) has ever done, but man...those vocals. After I calmed down and listened to it again remembering that Bathory's vocals have never been that great anyway, I kind of liked it. There is some fine(out of tune) guitar work in there to hear, if you can get past the awful singing. If you are just getting into Bathory don't buy this one! get one of the older ones man! "The Return" is my personal favorite. If you want to hear "Viking metal" buy an Unleashed album, if you want to hear "Epic Bathory", buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Killer Viking metal! Twilight of the Gods!.......2003-11-07

Damn this is one awesome metal album! This is a one man album, that being the mighty Quorthon who plays guitar bass and sings. The drums on this album are a drum machine but it sounds excellent. Quorthon's clean vocals sound nice and refreshing rather than the screeches of earlier Bathory, but all Bathory is good. There's a nice classical influence that compliments this album. Each song is at least 7 minutes long, which is a good thing. Of all the Bathory albums I think this one has the best production and sound quality. It's a wonderful metal album that everyone should own. I don't know what is wrong with that John Holton punk(he must be g@Y), he says the album is dissapointing, he must be a lame slipknot fan...anyway this album is a masterpiece, I think it's one of the better Bathory albums in their catalog, I recommend this to anyone who likes real metal. Peace!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-09-17

A fairly poor album. Quorthon's guitar is noticeably (and painfully) out of tune in several acoustic passages, and his attempts at clean vocals (as opposed to the harsh guttural vocals of earlier albums) are almost laughable; he is almost unable to carry a tune. The songs are rather monotonous musically, though the lyrics are interesting. The last track (with music from Gustav Holst's "The Planets") is not a very good blending of metal and classical (if you like that mix, listen to Therion). Overall, this was a disappointment after being introduced to Bathory with "Under the Sign of the Black Mark".

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2001-08-12

Twilight of the Gods was my first Bathory cd after hearing so much about them. I like sorts of black metal offshoots. This is Viking metal. There is also some Nietzsche thrown in- a quote and the title track, Twilight of the Gods, which I think is the high point. There is a classical influence. This is very heavy and slower with clean vocals and chanting. This is the last of the Asatru trilogy by Bathory. Truely, an enchanting album is Twilight of the Gods.

5 out of 5 stars JUST ESSENTIAL ATMOSPHERIC MUSIC!!!.......2001-01-14

This is a essential atmospheric epic-progressive metal, with Quorthon's sung vocals (not screamed), with beautiful melodies and good lyrics. This late Bathroy's work (1991), together with "Blood on Ice", are the last good stuff of this swedish group. I think Quorthon has done himself everything at this album, but I am not sure, as my version just shows the lyrics and not so much about the credits... Don't expect to hear trendy black metal of the 90's here... Quorthon does what he wants and "Twilight..." is very well done... Just light a bit of incenses and get into this trip... It's very nice!!!
