3 out of 5 stars Yep, it's comin' boys.......2007-03-06

In the lazy crazy dayz of '88 nobody knew that the Seattle shoegazers were only a few years away. Certainly not bands like Cinderella who peddled honest enough hard rock that's perfect for downing beers to while sporting the dodgiest stage clobber this side of a Scorpions gig circa '86.

Which is a pity as just like their debut, Cinderella have put together a good few tunes and padded them out into an album with filler tracks that - well OK they're filler but not bile inducing.

As per their debut there is a lot of mid paced chugging riffage here. It's not awesome but it is wholesome. Keifer continues to expand on themes of rockin' out, good times and even some introspection albeit through an empty bottle. Solid stuff that any half decent bar band should be able to make their own (that's a compliment - this is bar room boogie rock in many ways) and the band seem a little tighter which shows what getting out and touring will do for you.

Just like the debut album this has a number of guest musicians, simple production which is totally appropriate for this sort of staff and seemingly a band really believing in their mission.

Three stars for this one as there is a chunk of filler here betwixt good sweat soaked hard rock. If you can pick up both this and Night Songs cheap then do so but otherwise the newcomer may be better off getting Still Climbing, the bands 1994 album and best work. Then come back to this and Night Songs.

There, hope that helped...

4 out of 5 stars Separated them from the hair metal pack .......2007-01-15

After selling millions with their debut album, Night Songs, Cinderella released Long Cold Winter in 1988. While most bands would have attempted to continue their success by making a similar sounding album, Cinderella took the road less traveled and expanded their musical horizons. Some of the catchy riffs that carried Night Songs remained in the mix. However, Long Cold Winter boasted more melodic material featuring piano, acoustic guitars, and a Hammond B3 adding color. As a result, the band were able to continue their success and receive a lot more airplay as Long Cold Winter boasted 4 hit singles, three of which hit the Billboard Top 40.

The album opens with "Bad Seamstress Blues/Fallin' Apart at the Seams", a great tune about life on the road. "Gypsy Road" has a great riff and an even better chorus and would become one of the band's most popular songs. The title track saw the band jump headfirst into the electric blues and both Tom Keifer's guitar solo and vocal performance here are outstanding. The more melodic tracks truly shine and would ultimately give them their greatest success. "Coming Home" and "The Last Mile" are great songs boasting strong harmonies and melodies and would both be big hits. The piano ballad "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)" would become their biggest hit single and would be featured on many `80s power ballad compilation discs like Monster Ballads. The album closing "Take Me Back" is another strong track that combines hard rock with a sense of melody. The remaining tracks are all riff rockers with "Second Wind" being one of their best heavy tracks while "Fire and Ice" and the Zeppelinesque "If You Don't Like It" are decent at best. All told, Long Cold Winter showed that Cinderella weren't just another hair metal band and their next release, Heartbreak Station, would separate them even further from the pack.

5 out of 5 stars Good Follow-up; Odd Choice of Title Track.......2006-09-15

Cinderella followed up "Night Songs" well when they relseased this. But I'm not entirely sure why "Long Cold Winter" was the title track. Because frankly, it's not even the best ballad on here. I am, of course, comparing with "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)" and "Coming Home."

They started this off well with the opening medley "Bad Seamstress Blues/Falling Apart at the Seams." This rock/blues fusion shows some of the band's diversity.

"Gypsy Road" and "The Last Mile" are some of the best-known tracks here, and understandably so. Both tracks build nicely from a lighter start to a solid rock sound.

"Second Wind" is also note-worthy and I would have suggested that as the title. After all, it was their second recording.

"If You Don't Like It" & "Fire And Ice" are also strong rock offerings and "Take Me Back" is a great ending to this recording. I think this CD shows the band's maturity musically & lyically. I would say that as a whole, this is a worthy follow-up and is one that should be appreciated and enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars The Boys From Philly, got Bluesed and released a classic master piece!!!.......2006-09-12

I remember purchasing this one way back in 1988 and it's still a favorite all these years later. What a awesome release, with Long Cold Winter. Great song selection, no fillers and unleashed the triple rock threat of Tom Keifer. By this he's a amazing singer, songwriter, guitarist and can't forget he also produced their releases. As a band they had it all, probably the most surprising fact about them is. Their drummer Fred Coury, never played on either Night Songs and Long Cold Winter. Rally that makes this release more special that it was done with two legends on drums Cozy Powell(RIP, You where Awesome) and Denny Carmassi, along with Paulinho DaCosta on Percussion. Another amazing fact or at least I feel this way. This was their second release , what a surprise the Bluesy approach and all the Gems on this one being: Bad Seamstress Blues/Fallin' Apart At The Seams, Gypsy Road, Don't Know What You Got, The Last Mile, Second Wind, Coming Home, If You Don't Like It, Fire And Ice, and 18 years later also like Long Cold Winter and Take Me Back. Definately, well worth it to track this release down and along with their other 3 studio releases, 3 live discs, both Once Upon a Time and Gold for the new tracks on them. Lastly had Polygram/Mercury aggressively supported Cinderella they would still be around leaving their fans Bluesed, Wired and Rocked.

5 out of 5 stars Great sound!.......2006-06-13

This is the band's best album in my opinion. Tom Keifer has some great vocals. A very scratchy, yet unique sound. Great songs. If you're going to buy any of the band's cd's then buy this one!
