Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Gin and Caviar.......2006-10-27

I like this album. I've liked it since it came out. I think it makes me tolerate The New Pornographers more than I should because I enjoy this so much. Anyway, the reviewer two doors down can turn erudite to gibberish and write reviews that the average person who wants an opinion will toss aside after seconds, realizing it's a scene out of "When Good Thesauri Turn Bad." This album gets a lot of "dissonance," "noise," "sludge" and "thick" tags. It is some of that I guess, but for all it's buzzsaw, it's extraordinarily toe-tapping if not downright poppy. It's worth a listen just to see it pulled off. Vocals are often indiscernible and screechy, more of an "extra instrument" than anything else. At the same time I still find myself singing along (after all these years I am sure I have come up with lyrics that are nowhere near accurate). It has the underpinnings of emo sprinkled throughout despite its initial onslaught of noise. I don't know if it is still released with the same cover, but the original had a reverse cover that showed a Mexican vaquero band all-clad in tassles and blue cowboy gear with the band's name as El Superconductor and the album's title as "Once Exitos Para Las Chicas Listas." If anything, this provides great insight into the band's sense of humor, and I think one has to keep that in mind when listening to the album.

3 out of 5 stars Oregon is on crack.......2005-07-31

It is so funny how some reviewers have to try and sound so "well read" in order to tell you if the album is good or not. Mr. Oregon is a "smart" guy and he is trying to tell you if you don't like underground indie rock don't buy this. That is a lot easier that trying to go on and on and on and on about a review that is meaningless. If you like Steel Pole Bath Tub, Comets on Fire or Fu Manchu, this is up you alley.
