2.5 stars, I'm dissappointed.......2007-01-30
This is the first Dream Theater CD I've bought, which I did with anticipation since there are so many raving reviews in the prog community web sites, and Mike Portnoy's side projects - especially Transatlantic. It's supposed to be, along with Scenes From a Memory, their "masterpiece". It also might be the last Dream Theater CD I ever buy. Not only the recording quality is mediocre, with very compressed, flat sound, but the music doesn't really do anything for me. Sure, these guys can play very well, very fast, and very hard, but as much as there is amazing musicianship, the songwriting is not very good. Once you get pass their technical abilities it gets boring fast. Also, LaBrie's singing is annoying to me, Portnoy is really busy using every fill he knows on every song... I could go on and on about why I don't think this is worth my money... If you are thinking about getting into DT, try listening full samples first, it might not be your ticket as I found out it is not mine. I'm happy I tried it, got it over with, and moved on.
Classic Melodic Progressive Metal.......2007-01-26
This is the album that brought Dream Theater to the masses and firmly established them at the top of the prog rock heap. In fact by 1992 when this album came out progressive rock was all but dead in the U.S. The fact that the single from this album "Pull Me Under" received any airplay at all was rather remarkable for the time period. The album is a true classic without a weak track on it. Charlie Dominici is replaced by James Labrie on vocals and there is no contest as to which one is the better singer. "Pull Me Under" starts of the album with a bang, listening to it again after all these years it still pulls me in and I find myself banging my head along with the chugging intro. The centerpiece of this album is the almost 10 minute "Metropolis Part 1". This has long been a fan favorite and a staple of the band's live shows. The song is actually only an excerpt from a longer work that would be released as the album "Scenes From A Memory" a decade later. The song is all that makes Dream Theater great, extreme complex prog metal instrumental interplay, intelligent well thought out lyrics, soaring vocals. The rest of the album is also very strong. "Another Day", "Take The Time", "Surrounded", "Under A Glass Moon", "Wait For Sleep" and the epic album closer "Learning To Live" are all eloquently crafted and performed. If a nutshell this album is about as good as melodic progressive metal gets.
Great progressive rock and roll.......2007-01-10
Often when one goes digging back into a band's catalogue what is found are recordings that only show their immaturity and lack of experience. Rarely do you find a gem like this one. I didn't really care for "Awake" and expected the same with this one but not so. This is well-crafted and expertly performed progressive rock album from beginning to end. Every song is a surprise and a joy to listen to. I only wish I would have known about these guys 15 years ago. Better late than never, though!
Living Legends, no doubt!.......2006-12-22
Having growing up in the 80's, progressive rock wasn't much of a thing in my era. The chart rulers were Metallica and the likes, and miraculously lots of us guys were still into Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath (fronted by both Ozzy and up to about Dio). Well, all that have progressed to the 90's and came with it was "Dream Theater", a band known for their Metallica-Zeppelin influences and their debut album "Images and Words" just frickin' rocks to this day (thank GOD)! The opening track "Pull Me Under" was their signature; a hard head-banging number filled with Metallica style heavy riffs, a bit of Sebastian Bach ala vocalist James LaBrie and to the melody in the likes of Led Zeppelin. That's not done yet, the rest of the album is chocked full with the band's amazing musical talents showcasing in all aspects from the brooding and techinical basslines of John Myung, the sheering fluid fingers of keyboardist Kevin Moore, the AMAZING Mike Portnoy on drums and the highlight of the band is indeed newcomer John Petrucci and his limitless capabilities on the guitar. "Images and Words" is an album everyone can enjoy whether they're from the Progressive or Metal era and are into music that have constant changes. This album is timeless and I haven't got over it yet, I probably won't ever!
