Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best metal albums ever........2007-03-08

Marty Friedman makes this album what it is. I'm so glad they let him loose on it, otherwise it wouldn't be the classic it is today. Definitely check out Marty's album Dragon's Kiss and his Cacophony work with Jason Becker.
Rust in Peace has brought tears to my eyes at times...it's THAT awesome.

5 out of 5 stars How did i miss this metal masterpiece?.......2007-01-23

I bought this album just a few weeks ago and was blown away. It's an all out thrash metal assault, rivaling Metallica's Kill 'Em All, IMHO. Now, I have been a fan of metal for close to 12 years and have an extensive collection of music including Metallica, Sepultura, Slayer, Motorhead and many more.

However, Megadeth has somehow evaded my metal radar for all this time. I had picked up Rude Awakening, and Greatest Hits last year and was fairly impressed. After picking up R.I.P, it has become, for me, a ''top 3 release'' in my collection of my favorites. ''Take No Prisoners'' is one of the best off the record and also ''Rust In Peace...Polaris''..catchy as hell!

I have also picked up a used 1990 copy of the album (I bought the 2004 remaster/remix, first). The original master, for me, sounded superior (being not as clear sounding, but heavier and tighter). The 2004 remaster/remix sounds crystal clear, but the sound seems a bit pulled apart and lacks the heavier, more concentrated punch of the original. It still sounds great though, and the demo/bonus tracks are awesome.

This album is all killer without any filler, and if you like metal, buy it right away.

5 out of 5 stars One of the "Top 10" Thrash/Speed Metal albums of all time. Period........2006-11-22

There's not much that hasn't been said about Megadeth's RUST IN PEACE album. It is generally agreed upon that this is a metal classic and one of the greatest heavy rock albums out there.

GUITARS: Fast, heavy, agressive, complex riffs. The lead guitar's light-speed, melodic guitar solos reach labyrinth-like proportions ["Hangar 18", "Tornado of Souls" for example] and the whole sonic assault is backed by heavy, solid rhythm guitars ["Holy Wars", "Rust in Peace . . . Polaris"]. This is technical speed metal at its best. Most guitarists today still remain speechless at the way in which Dave Mustaine [lead/rhythm guitar, vocals]and Marty Friedman [lead guitar] master this level of complexity.

10/10

DRUMS - Nick Menza[drums] at his best. Precise, varied, furious drumwork that provides the relentless guitars with the proper punch and rhythm.

10/10

VOCALS/LYRICS- There's not much to say about Mustaine's voice: you either like it, or you hate it. The fact is that the frontman's voice is incredibly unique and instantly recognizable. His trademark "snarl" and growls are embedded in the minds of hundreds of Megadeth fans who instantly think of the "Holy Wars" music video when hearing them.
POSSIBLY the only weak point of the album, although I would beg to differ.

6/10 - 8/10

The lyrics are, as always, meaningful. They are politically charged, critical of hypocritical politicians, war, and address society's problems in the same vein that PEACE SELLS . . . BUT WHO'S BUYING ? did.

10/10

OVERALL SCORE: 9.5/10

If you didn't have time to read the entire review, simply bear the following in mind:

RUST IN PEACE is an 80s metal masterpiece, that boasts incredible instrumental skill and poignant political awareness.

A MUST HAVE FOR ANY SERIOUS "METALHEAD"

5 out of 5 stars Megadeth's best metal album.......2006-11-19

Rust In Peace defines "Heavy Metal". The formula for this album? Nuclear War meets Aliens / UFO conspiracy. Dave Mustaine is angry from Holy Wars to the last song, Rust In Peace... Polaris. Dawn Patrol isn't hard and fast like the others. Its slow, but you get the idea of the drowsey 3rd shift security at the nuclear power plant that could blowup at any second, which only adds to the album's theme. Tornado of Souls is fast and heav from beginning to end. Take No Prisoners, Dave is as angry and pissed off as in Holy Wars. Hanger 18, again, UFO conspiracy but it adds to mystery betwee that and nuclear holocuast. Five Magics, Poison Was the Cure, and Lucretia are interesting follow up songs to add in between and keep the story going. Unfortunatly, this would be Megadeth's only outstanding album in terms of Heavy Metal. If only Megadeth stayed on this path after their next album, Countdown to Extinction, they would have thrived to being the best Heavy Metal band ever.

5 out of 5 stars Megadeth's most consistently excellent album. RIP is a thrash masterpiece!.......2006-11-07

Megadeth have always been a bit of a hit and miss affair. Their debut album didn't set my world alight, yet the follow-up "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" is a fantastic album. But then they followed that release with the rather average "So Far, So Good...So What?" which mixed some classic Megadeth tracks with some very ordinary material. I recall not knowing what the band was going to do next and fearing that they might be a one-album-wonder. How wrong I was!

"Rust in Peace" is without a doubt the bands best album. It mixes all the best Megadeth ingredients to create not only their ultimate release, but one of the finest examples that thrash metal has to offer. The line-up could have something to do with it, since this is the first album to include Marty Friedman's amazing guitar heroics. He combines perfectly with Dave Mustaine's already exceptional talent and together they produce a drool-worthy shredding partnership. Mustaine's vocals are also far superior to any of his previous work, finding the exact sound that his fairly limited range suits perfectly. But it's the song-writing that makes "Rust in Peace" the classic it is. Shredding riff after shredding riff, blistering memorable solos, catchy lyrics in the genre they work best (science fiction mixed with political disapproval) and a devastating way of building up each track to a climax.

While the first two tracks, "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due" and "Hangar 18", are both undeniably awesome, it's "Five Magics" that really rocks my world. Its atmospheric beginning holding the listener in its grip, preparing you for the incredible onslaught of thrash that is to come. The solos on this track are astounding and display just how important a role they can have when done well. Crank this baby up in volume and you'll be banging your head and raising the devil's horns in worship in no time!

As much as I adore "Rust in Peace", there are a few minor flaws that need mentioning and in my opinion drop it slightly below other thrash masterpieces such as "Reign in Blood" and "Master of Puppets". Firstly, the production isn't all that it could be. It doesn't quite have the crunch it deserves and the rhythm guitars are slightly tinny. But at least the clarity of each instrument is crystal clear, so I can't complain too much. Also, not every track on the album is of the almost impossibly high standard of the above mentioned classics. There are certainly no fillers on the album though and I'm extremely happy to announce that Megadeth decided not to include any unsuitable cover songs as they had on all prior releases. I firmly believe each of the three covers they'd done to this point (with maybe "These Boots" being an exception) completely ruined the momentum of the albums they were included on and ended up being the worst tracks.

All in all, "Rust in Peace" is an important part of metal's history and should be part of any metal fans collection. It's Megadeth's most consistently excellent album and stands up extremely well after over 15 years.
