Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Let's Do Damnation.......2004-10-09

One of the most appealing aspects of the Bykers was their raw and frenetic live shows. Although the chaotic nature of their music was palpably apparent throughout the course of their five official full-length albums (including the Rektum adventure), somehow the maelstrom was never fully captured in the studio. Either the production stifled the music, as with Drill Your Own Hole, or the multiple personality disorder that made the band so intriguing acted to dissipate their focus, inhibiting the energy and rendering great ideas into fragmentary compositions - as on Cancer Planet Mission.
There have been a smattering of semi-official releases throughout the 90's that have comprised a concoction of demos, outtakes, and e.p tracks. Some of these certainly have a distinctly rehearsal-room jam dynamic to them in terms of performance and recording quality. But it is the Peel Sessions recording that does most justice to the Bykers as a live band, and is compelling evidence to indicate that the folks at the BBC really did have a grip on what was taking place in alternative musical culture in the 80's.
Although I wished to avoid the triteness of referring to this recording as being 'raw', there really is no more succinct way of summing up the intensity of the Bykers Radio Session. From the revved up guitars on Don't Be Human Eric, all the way through to the Star Trekking tumult of Space Rape, this is a powerful and raucous romp that highlights the majestic early days of one of the most inventive of British 80's bands. And to have a copy of the otherwise unobtainable Ruby Red Lips only confirms the place of this cd on the compulsory purchase list for any fan of the Bykers, and indeed for anyone with an interest in a brief but hugely important moment in British music

5 out of 5 stars GBOA classics in a Peel-stylee.......2002-03-12

This is excellent, good to see this item for sale again.
If you are a GBOA fan, this item is essential, offering four wonderful tracks circa pre-"Drill Your Own Hole". "GET ON UP TO GET DOWN" is a demo-version of (what would become) their most commercial single, "GIT DOWN". And, if I'm not mistaken, this is the only place to get the track "RUBY RED LIPS" (which is, need I say, a great song).
Great stuff, and for that price damned hard to beat. BUY IT!!
